OVERCOMING THE FEAR OF FAILURE WORKSHEET

Do you struggle with the fear of failure? It’s actually a pretty common fear and can stop
us dead in our tracks when we’re setting out to achieve our goals. And this can be a
pretty tough situation, as having goals is very important since goals define where we
want to go in life. If we’re afraid of failure, then we might be uncomfortable setting
goals. But, without goals, there is no destination!

Using your imagination is a powerful tool to help you not only overcome your fear of
failure, but also for setting and achieving goals! Imagining how life will be after you've
reached your goal is a great motivator to keep you moving forward.

Using Imagination to Overcome Fear

Answer the following questions to help you work through your fear of failure with the
power of your imagination. Complete the steps in order and practice often with it. Use
this method anytime you feel the fear of failure cropping up.

Step 1: Questions
What do I want to achieve?

How could I potentially fail?

How can I crush this fear and replace it with a very positive outcome so I succeed
instead of fail?

What will the positive outcome be?

What will it look like when the positive outcome happens?

How will I feel when the positive outcome happens?

Now, once you have these questions written and answered, it's time for Step 2. Before
beginning step two, make sure that you are in a comfortable position. We recommend
doing this step right before you nod off to sleep.

Step 2: Reflection and Sparking Creativity with Imagination

❏ Take the answers to questions 4, 5, and 6 and read them over again until they
really stick with you.

❏ Next, get into a comfortable position. If you are lying in bed, feel free to lie flat on
your back or whatever position you feel most comfortable in.

❏ Call to mind the scenario you painted in the questions. Imagine the positive
outcome actually happening, how it will look around you, how you will feel.

❏ Now, imagine that this has already happened. Really imagine it! Imagine every
detail you can think of and put yourself there--in the best scenario possible for
your outcome.

❏ As you rest peacefully, allow your imagination to take over. Visualize how you
will look, how you will feel, how others will react--and then visualize that it all
has already happened.

❏ Stay in this imaginative positive state as long as you can; if you slip out of it, it's
okay. Simply do this over and over again in your mind until you fall asleep. Say to
yourself, “I have no fears, everything has already worked out the way I want.”

❏ Repeat this each night until your fear subsides. And, as you do so, notice if the
fear keeps cropping up in your imagination. If it does, repeat to yourself that you
have nothing to fear, and really believe that fear to be squashed and what you
visualize will come true.

The Beauty of Progress

Some of us struggle more with fears than others. There can be various reasons for this
as unique as the person’s own individuality. From childhood experiences to past failures
in adulthood, these can really stick with you and give way to a more negative prone
mindset. Afterall, the fear of failure can be crippling, and can create an unhealthy
pattern of avoidance towards goal setting, which will make you feel validated in your
fears. A common one is “I just can’t do it.”

If you're very prone to having a fear of failure and negative thinking, doing a major
visualization right off the bat as suggested in the above exercise may actually produce
negative or ineffective results as they may become too overwhelming to visualize. So,
you'll want to break your visualization down into smaller, what we call Progress Based
Goals. This is an important philosophy that we base much of our teachings on. We
believe that success is based on making progress, rather than success being based on
hitting a specific target.

In short, Progress Based Goals are simply goals that help you make progress towards
your bigger goal. Taking one small step at a time will help build your confidence, keep
you moving forward, and prevent you from getting overwhelmed with fears of your final
goal not working out like you want.

This method goes hand in hand with creating a Feedback Loop for yourself, you can
keep learning and improving as you progress with the action. In this way, you cannot
fail at all, unless you stop and give up! Isn’t that encouraging! You cannot fail when you
implement the idea of Progress Based Goals into your default mindset and create an
effective Feedback Loop to help you continue to propel yourself forward.
