Time Machine

Characters

Theme
Time travel
How man’s endeavors to ameliorate (make easy) can cause man to reach a climax and come to an
inevitable decline. That security makes us more susceptible to weakness.
Man eventually through co-operation will subjugate nature to suit our needs.
The struggle of life is what pushes humanity to toil until that eventual climax where there is no struggle
anymore.
The future: how the checks man placed to maintain the population succeed too much and this leads to
the decline of the population.
Social Differences : The Haves (upper world people/The rich) and The Have-Nots (subterranean/ poor
people) reference Chapter 8 page 63 yellow book.
Loneliness: the traveler is alone in his endeavor to regain his Time Machine.
Security: the conviction of issues that have been resolved and worries that are no
more. The eradication of disease and pests. Human security was the cause of
flourishing and the eventual collapse of civilization. For out of necessity Gomes
strength.
Re-emergence of fear. In a world without problems fear is not necessary but the
eloi wet reacquainted with it.

Plot
The plot follows the adventure of a man the time traveler. Who travels forward and back in time where
he encounter a world where human differentiated into 2 different species. The eloi (upper world) and
the Morlocks (underworld). The Morlocks take his Time Machine. He struggles to retrieve his Time
Machine. He returns to his own time tells his story and the unnamed character never sees him again this
time is 3 years after his departure.

A discussion is held on the grounds of geometry being founded on a misconception.
They discuss the about the dimensions: length, width, depth and Time, with emphasis on Time.
How the body moves through all 4 but the consciousnessonly moves in one. Examples are given for time
as a dimension the first one being a man whose picture was taken at varying moments in time. The
second was barometer whose measurements changed though it did not move in all dimensions except
that of time. The time traveller says that we cannot move in all three physical dimensions at will because
we cannot move up and down freely. The chapter ends with the time traveler returning to the meeting
with his machine to provide scientific evidence of his theory.

Summary
The Time Traveler returns with a small intricate machine that resembles a clock puts it on a small
octagonal table, that later after activation vanishes. He later relates to the man that the machine
required 2 years to construct.The Psychologist tries the Time Machine and send the machine on its
voyage but believes that it went in the past which is not accurate had it been a they would have seen the
Thursday before. Because they always meet on Thursdays. Filby goes less skeptical and winked at the
time traveler. He experiences the effects of man’s subjugation of nature. There were no pest fruits
putrefied at a slower rate there were no signs of diseases.

Summary
The character begins by relating his thoughts on the time travelers invention. On how he might have
been too skeptical. They meet at the Hosts house (Time Traveler) but he does not seem to be there.
When the Time Traveler arrived he was in a decrepit state. He had dirt all over him and his hair had
faded. He had a haggard expression. The Editor and Journalist started ridiculing the The time traveler.
The journalists were young men. The name of the 3 new guests are Blank, Dash and Chose. The chapter
ends with the time traveler saying he lived 8 days as no such human Had ever lived he spent it in his
laboratory.

The Time traveler tells the story of his time traveling. The machine has been slightly travel worn. He
recounts that after activation of the machine five and half hours had elapsed. He had seem time fly. He
ponders the possibility of stopping but was scared that some object might be occupying the space he
was traversing.He realized that the Time Machine worked by speeding his atoms at very high speed and
that is why he was concerned that his a at atoms might collide with those occupying the space in the
future. He saw a tall white figure the chapter ends with him seeing a small creature.

Summary
He attempts to climb a summit. He assumes that communism was the root cause of mankind fall.
He ponder situation of the sexes of the creatures where there aren’t many. He sits on a yellow rusty
metallic chair and views how the world had to his perspective become a garden. His interpretation is that
the state of humanity has declined. He thinks of how the process of facilitating life resulted in a climax.
He discovers that the year 802701 there is no toil or struggle and realizes that it is a social paradise.
Setting
The future where the traveler find himself is the year 802701 A.D.

Symbolism
Sunset: as the sun goes down it signals the end of the day so the traveler draws his interpretation to the
sunset of mankind referring to their decline.

This show that strength be it physical emotional or mental develops as a response to necessity.

Summary
The Chapter begins with the traveler recounting the engine like thuds he heard emanating from the
wells. He later concludes that all the wells were connected subterranean. He had saved one of the
creatures while her fellow kind watched as she was taken away by the current. He spoke with the
creature and found her name to be Weena. This relationship lasted a week. The creatures were afraid of
the dark. They slept in groups never separated. The night before he had saved her he experienced a
nightmare in which he was drowning and a grayish animal rushed out the hall as he awoke from his
restless slumber. He saw White apelike creatures moving about the area around the hall. That Humans
had differentiated in 2 different species the graceful children from above and the subterranean
monsters. 3 aspects told him that the subterranean creatures had a habit of living under ground
1. Their pale greyish skin
2. The large eyes, with the capacity to reflect light.
3. Confusion in the sunshine.
The traveler draws references to the past his own time as to how mankind differentiated into 2 species.
The reference is made with the explanation of social difference between Capitalist and Labourer.
The underground is used for less ornamental(beautiful) purposes of civilization. The beautiful race is
called the Eloi (above ground pretty) and the Morlocks (subterranean monsters).

This was a selfish act by the traveler.

Above ground you must have the Haves, pursuing pleasure and comfort and beauty, and below ground
the Have-nots; the Workers getting continually adapted to the conditions of their labour.

He had entered The palace of green porcelain that had in appearance and interior the features of a
museum. He discovers the bones of an extinct create. The creatures resembles a Megatherium
(prehistoric Sloth). In the museum he inspects the machinery of old yet does not understand there use.
He then breaks of a piece from some machine. Said piece is a mace that he may use to fight the
morlocks. He wanted to go and kill a Morlock he found a box of matches in the chemistry department.
He Also discovered two cartridges of dynamite. They were dummies.

Gazette a timepiece that had indicated to him that he was in the correct time.
