Simple Tensile Test....

The document describes performing a tensile test on a specimen to determine its material properties and behavior under stress. A 0.2% carbon specimen is tested in a machine to record its stress-strain curve. Dimensions are measured and the specimen is pulled until failure while load and deformation data is recorded. The same test is then modeled in ANSYS software to simulate and verify the experimental results.

Tensile Test

Aim: To perform a simple tensile test on a given specimen and then verify data recorded in laboratory with ANYS Finite Element Analysis software. Objective: The main aim of this experiment is to determine the behaviour of the given specimen under tensile test and to find out the stress and strain curve. The given specimen is 0.2% of carbon. From the tensile test we can find out youngs modulus, yield point stress, ultimate strength, ultimate tensile stress, percentage elongation at fracture, percentage reduction in cross-sectional area at fracture, breaking stress andfracture stress. Now a days tensile test are widely being used in many industry for determining material property. Theory: Tensile test is a simple way of determining how a specimen will be reacts if we pull it apart. Types of Tensile Testing

Method: there are two part of this test one in practical way and other is software way. 1) The given specimen is 0.2% carbon. 2) First we need to find out the dimension of the specimen with the help of venire calliper. The dimension are: Length of the specimen: Total length of the specimen: Diameter of the specimen: Diameter of the specimen: Gage length: 3) After finding out the dimension we need to insert the specimen in the testing machine. 4) fix the one end of the specimen so that it didnt move 5) Now attached the other end with the movable jaw.so that when we apply the force the movable jaw pull the specimen in uniaxial direction. 6) Input the correct data to the pc connected to the testing machine. Make sure that the initially value is zero. 7) Now after inserting the specimen in the testing machine apply the loads.

8) Gradually increase the load .as we go on increasing the load we can notice there will be change in the dimension of the specimen. The diameter will be decreasing and the length will be increasing. Increase the load till the specimen breaks. 9) Data for the tensile test will be recorded in the computer attached with the tensile testing machine so that it will generate the stress-strain curve. 10) After failure measures the final diameter, final gage length and observe the fracture point. 11) Now we have a stress strain curve .with the help of graph find out the youngs modulus. 12) Take out the print out of the curve. Laboratory method: The software which we used in our lab is ansys workbench. Now we have to create a solid model by following steps below. First Start ansys workbench and then select static structural. Engineering data will be already given so we need to move to next step. After that double click geometry After that select millimetre length unit and then ok. With this step our unit will be fix to millimetre. 5) Select zx plane. 6) Now change to sketching from modelling to sketch by selecting sketching tools. 7) Select circle drawing tools to draw the circle at the centre of the axis. Draw > circle 8) Now draw the circle at the centre of the axis. 9) now select dimension and then specify the diameter of the circle. 10) Select the circle whose diameter has to be specify. 11) Now we have the circle at the centre. 12) Now again change to modelling from sketching and then select extrude tool. 13) Now after that specify the length of the extrude. 14) After specifying the length generate the solid with given dimension. 15) With that step geometry section complete. 16) Now again double click the model section. 17) 1) 2) 3) 4)
