Activity 1 Title: Understanding Websites: Structure, Purpose, and Tools

Welcome to the world of web development! Today, we will work together in groups
to learn about websites, their purpose, and how they are created. Don’t worry—you
don’t need any prior knowledge about web development or HTML to participate.
Let’s get started!

Objective:

By the end of this activity, you will:

 Understand the purpose of different types of websites.

 Learn about basic website components like headers, content areas, and footers.
 Discover tools used for creating and viewing websites.

Instructions:

Form Groups: Your instructor will divide you into small groups of 3 members. Each
group will work on a specific type of website.

Assigned Website Type: Your group will be assigned one of the following types of
websites:

o Informational Website (e.g., a government site or an online encyclopedia)

o E-commerce Website (e.g., an online shopping site)
o Educational Website (e.g., an online learning platform)

Step 1: Brainstorm (10 minutes)

o Discuss with your group the purpose of your assigned website type.
o Answer these questions together:

 What is the main purpose of this website?

 Who will visit this website (target audience)?
 What type of content should the website include? (e.g., text, images,
videos)

Step 2: Design Your Homepage (15 minutes)

o Use a blank sheet of paper to sketch the layout of your website’s homepage.
o Include the following elements in your design:

 Header: Think about what should go at the top of the page (e.g., a title or
logo).
 Main Content Area: Add sections for text, images, or videos.
 Footer: What information belongs at the bottom of the page? (e.g., contact
info or links)

o Label each section and describe its purpose (e.g., “This section will have a picture of
a shopping cart for the e-commerce site”).

Step 3: Tools for the Future (5 minutes)

o Discuss as a group: What tools would you use to turn your design into a real
website?
o Refer to this list for ideas:

 Text Editors (e.g., Notepad, Sublime Text)

 WYSIWYG Editors (e.g., Dreamweaver, Canva)
 Browsers (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari) to view your website.

Step 4: Present Your Work (15 minutes)

o Each group will present their sketch to the class.

o Share:

 The purpose of your website.

 The target audience.
 Key features you included in your homepage design.
 The tools you would use to create the website.

Step 5: Feedback and Reflection (5 minutes)

o After each presentation, the class will provide feedback.

o Your instructor will discuss real-life examples related to each website type.

Materials You’ll Need:

 Paper and pencils/markers (or a digital design tool, if available).
 Creativity and teamwork!

Timeframe:
 Brainstorming: 10 minutes
 Designing: 15 minutes
 Presentations: 15 minutes
 Feedback and wrap-up: 5 minutes
