How to develop communication skill in students.

Speaking fluently and interacting with others is an integral part

of developing one’s personality, which is an important
prerequisite for any person. Effective communication is of
paramount value to any person to eke out a creditable place in
society. Modern concept of education provides a student with
the necessary platform to shape his destiny. Students with
good communication skill will have an edge over their peers in
contributing effectively to class room discussions and there by
taking a lead role in all aspects of academic pursuits. Hence
this boils down to the question of improving the quality of
communication among the young and impressionable minds.
Communication is a two way path which signifies that there is a
communicator and also the one to whom something is
communicated. The communication takes place only when
information is shared amid two individuals. Effective
communication can help to build and encourage a safe learning
atmosphere where students can learn and prosper. The
significance of building good communication at a young age is
critical in a child’s growth and future learning. Communication
skills that students learn at school are completely vital and
transferable across all aspects of life.
Let us highlight some points for developing effective
communication skill among students.
1.Encourage students to engage in communication.
Motivate them to engage in conversation. Unless coerced,
majority of them desist from taking any initiative. Most of the
students may not want to talk at all. This makes it tough for
them to express their feelings or emotions when needed. So
motivate them to do activities. Commence and support talks
through activities, during paired reading activities and while
playing games. Discuss feelings about events in the classroom
and thus provide psychological support and scaffolding to
establish stronger communication skills in students.
2.Create a safe and salubrious ambiance.
Build a class room the students can call a home. Create a
comfortable atmosphere where they may feel free to express
their thoughts and ideas. An ambiance that permits students to
ask if they require help is vital to their academic success. Have
an open door policy to facilitate them to express their ideas
without fear or inhibition.
3.Active Listening
Listen to the students attentively and give them a feeling that
you care for them. This is an important aspect of developing
the skill in them. Encourage and motivate them to ask
questions in the class room.
4. Team work
Team work or working together is an interesting as well as an
encouraging factor in winning as a team rather than achieving
individual milestones. This can improve communication,
collaboration, and cooperation among them.
5. Allow students to share opinions
When a student is asked for his or her opinion, a natural elation
comes in the students. This is a stepping stone which will drive
the student to excel in that field. Communication plays a vital
part in this exercise. They feel more comfortable to speak on
varied topics.

6.Positive feedback
Often teachers fail to appreciate the students and it
demotivates them. Positive feedback when a student has
performed well is required from the mentor to motivate him
further .This unquestionably raises the expectations of the
student and motivates him to do better. Positive feedback can
help to build confidence , supportive ambiance and create a
good harmony. Enhancing outcomes for impacted students and
encouraging a more open and collaborative learning ambience
for them to exhibit their very best for self benefit are the key to
a successful and beneficial pedagogy..
