By February 2023, the bridge was complete, and the villagers of Sarona could finally commute
with ease. The sense of pride and accomplishment was palpable, as the community realized that
they had the power to transform their own lives.
The story of Sarona village serves as a shining example of the empowering impact of Gram
Sabha in rural communities. By providing a platform for collective action, Gram Sabha has
enabled the residents of Sarona to demand their rights, and take charge of their own destiny. As
the villagers of Sarona look to the future, they do so with a renewed sense of hope, and a deep
understanding of the power of community action.
In June 2022, campaign workers from the Gram SwashasanAbhiyan visited Sarona village,
encouraging residents to hold regular Gram Sabha meetings
to discuss and resolve their problems. The villagers,
including Parvesh, began attending these meetings, which
empowered them to take charge of their own development.
During one of these meetings, Parvesh shared his struggles
with irrigation and proposed the construction of a irrigation
well. The Gram Sabha supported his proposal and
approached the local authorities, who approved the construction of the well under the Mahatma
Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in December 2022.
With the help of the Gram Sabha, Parvesh began working on the irrigation well in February
2023. By June 2023, the well was completed, and Parvesh was finally able to irrigate his land.
The well not only benefited Parvesh but also the surrounding fields, bringing new life to the area.
Moreover, the well also benefited a nearby tola (hamlet) called BhalhiKhala, which is home to
around 100-170 people from the Dalit community
Community-Led Initiative for Access to Safe Drinking Water in Sarouna
Village
The village of Sarouna, located in the Tukbera panchayat, has 35 families belonging to the
Parhiya tribe, a primitive indigenous community. The primary occupation of these families is
labor and farming.
The village had a single water source, a defunct water tower, which led to a severe water crisis.
The villagers had to fetch water from a nearby
well, 500 meters away.
Intervention:-The villagers discussed the issue
with the workers of Vikas Sahyog Kendra, who
were implementing the Gram Swashasan Abhiyan
in the village. The workers advised the villagers to
submit an application to the concerned authorities.
The villagers collectively submitted a proposal to
the Gram Sabha on October 11, 2023, to construct
a new water tower. The Gram Sabha unanimously
decided to submit an application to the Block Development Officer. After six months, when no
action was taken, the villagers decided to meet the Block
Development Officer again and also inform the Deputy
Commissioner. Within two months of submitting the
application, the water tower was constructed
