Course description

This course builds on knowledge developed throughout first and second years of the
program including health promotion, communication, health assessment, anatomy and
physiology, fundamental of nursing, obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing and nursing
practices. It complements the students' learning in research principles and
development of their nursing practice knowledge, attitude and skills in a variety of
health care settings within a multidisciplinary team environment. This knowledge is
applied specifically to the needs of children and their families in this in areas of
growth monitoring, identifying children with protein energy malnutrition and
preventive measures like immunization, and health education, various neonatal and
child hood disease conditions and offer students the opportunity to give nursing care
to individuals, families and caregivers by using nursing process and IMNCI protocols.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Justify the use of family-centered and partnership approaches when promoting


family health and wellbeing.
2. Plan and review evidence-based health care for infants, children and
adolescents within their family context across a range of settings
3. Evaluate evidence-based health care when caring for an infant, child or
adolescent who interacts with the health system, experiences a serious or life-
threatening health issue, or dies.

access health care

4. Describe care of normal newborn care
5. Describe nursing management of common neonatal management
6. Discuss nursing management of common neonatal and childhood illnesses

8. Describe targets and schedules of EPI
9. Describe diagnostic approach of HIV among pediatric age group
10. Determine eligibility for ART or to start Prophylaxis and aspects of patient
adherence to ART
11. Plan appropriate nursing care for HIV exposed and infected children using
standard precaution
12. Interpret growth monitoring assessment of children by using Anthropometric
measurements
13. Interpret child nutritional assessment and plan nursing management
14. Discuss IMNCI principles and approaches in management of each common
neonatal and child hood illness
15. Classify and identify appropriate treatment of common neonatal and childhood
diseases using IMNCI protocol
