Maths 6 Challenging Practice (Level 3)

Module 5: Measurements

Answers (b) 1.92 /min = 1920 ml/min

Modular Exam Prep Pack Time taken to fill the water tank
Challenging Practice Level 3 = 34 560 ÷ 1920
= 18 min [M1]
1. ANS: 1680 cm3
SOL:
Base area of P = 8 × 10
= 80 cm2
Base area of Q = 22 × 10
= 220 cm2
Difference in base area = 220 – 80 [A1]
= 140 cm2 [M1] The water tank will be completely filled
Height = 2940 ÷ 140 with water at 9.48 a.m.
= 21 cm [M1]
Volume of P = 8 × 10 × 21 5. ANS: 11.6 cm
= 1680 cm3 [A1] SOL:
The volume of P is 1680 cm3. Volume of water poured from Tank X to Tank Y
= 60 × (27 − 20)
2. ANS: 5 cm = 60 × 7
SOL: = 420 cm3 [M1]
Base area of each block = 25 × 10 Increase in height of water level (Tank Y)
= 250 cm2 = 420 ÷ 50
[M1] = 8.4 cm
Difference in height of C and B = 2500 ÷ 250 [M1]
= 10 cm [M1] Initial height of water level (Tank Y)
Height of B = (20 – 10) ÷ 2 = 20 − 8.4
= 5 cm = 11.6 cm [A1]
[A1] The height of the water level in Tank Y at first
The height of B is 5 cm. was 11.6 cm.

3. ANS: 131 min 6. ANS: 33.33 cm

SOL: SOL:
Volume of water needed to fill the tank Total volume of water

= × 200 × 150 × 150 = (60 × 50 × 40) + ( × 30 × 40 × 50)

= 3 000 000 cm3 = 120 000 + 20 000
= 3000 = 140 000 cm3 [M1]
[M1] Total base area of container and tank
Volume of water added to tank every 2 min = (60 × 50) + (30 × 40)
= (20 × 2) + 6 = 3000 + 1200
= 40 + 6 = 4200 cm2 [M1]
Height of water level in the end
= 46 [M1] = 140 000 ÷ 4200
Number of groups of 46 in 3000 [M1]
= 3000 ÷ 46 = 33.33 cm (correct to 2 decimal places) [A1]
The height of the water level in the end was 33.33
cm.
= 65
After 65 × 2 = 130 min, the tank contained 7. ANS: 46.1 cm
65 × 46 = 2990 of water. SOL:
[M1] Let the height of Tank A in the end be h cm.
Hence, 3000 − 2990 = 10 more water Then the height of Tank B in the end is 2 × h = 2h
are needed to fill the tank. cm.
20  2 min Volume of water in Tank A at first
10 2÷2 = 60 × 42 × 80
= 1 min [M1] = 201600 cm3 [M1]
Time taken = 130 + 1 Volume of water in Tank A in the end
= 131 min [A1] = 60 × 42 × h
It took 131 min for the rectangular tank to be = 2520h cm3 [M1]
completely filled with water. Volume of water in Tank B in the end
= 82 × 38 × 2h
4. ANS: (a) 34 560 cm3 (b) 9.48 a.m.
SOL: = 6232h cm3 [M1]
(a) Capacity of water tank 2520h + 6232h = 201600
= (30 × 12 × 68) + (35 × 12 × 24) 8752h = 201600
= 24 480 + 10 080 h = 23.03 cm [M1]
= 34 560 cm3 [A1] 2h = 2 × 23.03
The capacity of the water tank is 34 560 cm3. ≈ 46.1 cm [A1]
The height of the water level in Tank B
in the end was 46.1 cm.
