Assignment (Spring 2024)

The assignment for the Digital Signal Processing course at International Islamic University Chittagong requires students to submit a scanned PDF and hard copy by specified dates. It includes two main questions: computing the DFT and FFT of a given discrete-time signal and designing a FIR filter based on provided specifications. Students must derive parameters from their ID and apply them in the assignment tasks.

Assignment
Course Code: EEE-3603 Course Title: Digital Signal Processing I Semester: Spring 2024
Marks: 20 (will be converted into 10)
Submission Time: Submit scanned pdf via google form on or before 16/5/2024, a Google form
will be shared in the what’s app group. Submit the hardcopy on or before 22/5/2024.
Important Note:Compare your ID with the syntax ET-ALBCMN and find the value of A, B, C, L, M and
N. You have to use the values A, B, C, L, M and N in different questions to assume the parameters related
to the question. For example, if your matric ID is ET-143021, you have to assume A=1, B=3, C=0, L=4,
M=2 and N=1.

Q1. Assume, a discrete time causal signal 𝑥(𝑛) = {𝑀, 𝐿 − 𝑁, 𝑀 − 𝑁, 𝑁} CO-2 10

Now, answer to the following questions-
i) Compute the DFT of the discrete-time signal x(n).
ii) Compute the FFT of the discrete-time signal x(n). [Hints: Draw the
butterfly diagram for the 4-point FFT and compute the FFT of x(n) using
this diagram]
iii) From the above two computations justify the statement, “DFT and
FFT do the same task, however, FFT is more computationally efficient
than DFT”.
Q2. Design a band-pass/band-stop FIR filter with the following CO-3 10
specifications:
Lower Cutoff frequency= x Hz
Lower transition width= 𝑥 ′ Hz
Upper Cutoff frequency= y Hz
Upper transition width= 𝑦 ′ Hz
Passband ripple= PR dB
Stopband attenuation = SA dB
Sampling rate= 10KHz
Find the value of 𝒙, 𝒙′ , 𝒚, 𝒚′ , 𝑷𝑹, 𝑺𝑨 and filter type from the following
Table based on the value of L, M and N. Calculate only 9 samples of
impulse response of the filter symmetrically including center of
symmetry.
Condition Assumption Condition Assumption
M is even Band-stop filter M is odd Band-pass filter
N is even 𝑥 = 1000 + (𝑀 + 𝑁) ∗ 20 N is odd 𝑥 = 1100 + (𝑀 − 𝑁) ∗ 20
𝑥 ′ = 400 + (𝑀 + 𝑁) ∗ 30 𝑥 ′ = 500 + (𝑀 − 𝑁) ∗ 30
𝑦 = 2100 + (𝑀 + 𝑁) ∗ 25 𝑦 = 2300 + (𝑀 − 𝑁) ∗ 25
𝑦 ′ = 500 + (𝑀 + 𝑁) ∗ 15 𝑦 ′ = 600 + (𝑀 − 𝑁) ∗ 15
𝑴>𝑁 PR= 0.04 𝑴<𝑁 PR= 0.02
SA=40 𝒐𝒓, SA=60
𝑴=𝑵

Exception:If you find any parameter ( 𝑥, 𝑥 ′ , 𝑦, 𝑦 ′ ) is 0 in your case, you have to

assume a non-zero value for that parameter which is appropriate to solve the
problem.
