1 The mass specific gravity of a fully saturated specimen of clay having a water
content of 29% is 2.00. On oven drying, the mass specific gravity drops to 1.60.
Calculate the specific gravity of clay assuming the void ratio to remain
unchanged.
2 A soil has a void ratio of 0.70, degree of saturation 50% and G, = 2.7. Find the
water content, porosity, bulk density, and dry density. By how much can the
water content be increased without changing dry density.
3 A proposed earthen dam will have a volume of 5000000 m of compacted soil.
The soil is to be taken from a borrow pit and will be compacted to a void ratio
of 0.8. The void ratio of soil in the borrow pit is 1.15. Estimate the volume of
soil that must be excavated from the borrow pit for the construction of the
above dam.
4 A soil sample has a porosity of 40%. The specific gravity of solids is 2.7.
Calculate, (i) void ratio (ii) dry density (iii) unit weight of soil if the soil is 50 %
saturated (iv) unit weight of soil if the soil is completely saturated.
5 Earth is required to be excavated from borrow pits for building an
embankment of height 6 m, top width 2 m and side slopes 1:1. The unit weight
of undisturbed soil in wet condition as 18 kN/m and its natural water content
is 8 percent. The dry density required in the embankment is 20 kN/m with a
water content of 10%. The specific gravity of soil solids is 2.70. Estimate the
quantity of earth required to be excavated in the borrow area to construct one
metre length of the embankment. If each truck capacity = 80 kN/trip,
determine the total truck loads required per metre length of embankment?
What are the values of porosity and degree of saturation on the embankment?
6 Sampler with a volume of 45cm3 is filled with a soil sample. When the soil is
poured into a graduated cylinder, it displaces 25cm3 of water. What is the
porosity and void ratio of the soil?
7 The void ratio and specific gravity of a sample of clay are 0.73 and 2.7
respectively. If the voids are 92% saturated, find the bulk density, and dry
density and the water content. What would be the water content for complete
saturation, the void ratio remains the same?
8 Soil is to be excavated from a borrow pit 03. which has a density of 1.75 gm/cc
and water of 12%. The specific gravity of soil particles is 2.7. The soil is
compacted so that water contents is 18% and the dry density is 1.65 gm/cc.
For 1000 cum of soil in fill, estimate i) Quantity of soil to be excavated from
the pit, in cum, ii) Amount of water to be added. Also determine the void ratios
of the soil in borrow pit and fill.
