This thesis investigates the effectiveness of the AI-powered paraphrasing tool Quillbot in enhancing the academic writing skills of students at President Ramon Magsaysay State University. The study, based on data from 67 respondents, found that while Quillbot is generally perceived as useful for improving vocabulary, grammar, and coherence, its actual impact on academic writing skills is minimal. The researchers propose an intervention plan, 'QUEST,' to provide workshops aimed at improving students' knowledge and effective use of the tool.

ABSTRACT

This study explores to determine the AI-powered paraphrasing tool Quillbot in

enhancing the academic writing skills of students at President Ramon Magsaysay State

University, Castillejos Campus.

Utilizing a descriptive-correlational research design, data were collected through

survey questionnaires from 67 respondents, predominantly female and aged 18–25. The study

examined perceptions of Quillbot in terms of knowledge, reasons for use, and usage

frequency. Results revealed that respondents generally agree on Quillbot’s utility, citing its

capacity to improve vocabulary, grammar, and coherence. However, significant differences in

usage patterns were observed based on age, while no significant differences were linked to

sex, academic performance, or family income. Correlation analysis indicated minimal impact

of Quillbot usage on academic writing skills.

Based on the summary of the investigations conducted and the conclusions arrived at,

while Quillbot supports paraphrasing tasks, its integration into academic writing requires

enhancement. To address this, an intervention plan titled “QUEST: QuillBot Utilization for

Enhanced Student Text-writing” was proposed, emphasizing workshops to improve

knowledge and effective application of the tool. This research underscores the potential of

integrating AI tools in educational contexts, recommending further exploration of their

specific functionalities and impacts on student outcomes.
