Prospectus 2024-25

Nagaland University is a Central University established on 6th September 1994 by an Act of


Parliament (No.35 of 1989) with its headquarters at Lumami in Zunheboto District. It has three
permanent campuses at Lumami, Medziphema and Meriema (Kohima) and a temporary campus
at Dimapur. The University has presently six Schools of Studies, viz. School of Sciences, School
of Social Sciences, School of Agricultural Sciences, School of Humanities & Education, School
of Engineering & Technology, and School of Management Studies. It has 43 Departments and
5 Centres of Studies offering Under Graduate, Post Graduate, M.Phil., Ph.D. and
Diploma/Certificate courses in various disciplines of Arts, Science, Commerce, Humanities,
Agriculture Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Management and Law.
Nagaland University has adopted the National Education Policy, 2020 which envisages
broad-based accessibility, multidisciplinary, holistic education withflexible curricula, creative
combination of subjects, integration of vocational education and multiple entry and exit points
with appropriate certification.
The University is committed to promote professionalism, creativity and innovation aimed at
making a positive impact on education and academic research. Nagaland University also lays
emphasis on skill development which is a key area for success in the job market.
Our focus is on efficient teaching-learning processes aimed at improvement in the quality of
teaching and competitiveness among the students in tune with the changing requirements.
Essential infrastructural facilities are in place in all campuses of the University such as
modern classrooms, internet connectivity, library with extensive collection of books and
journals to support teaching and research, access to National Digital Library, practical and
research laboratories with modern equipment, separate hostels for girls and boys, gymnasium,
playgrounds, indoor stadium, auditorium, health centre, cafeteria and other vital amenities for
students and campus residents.
As we enter the academic year 2024-25, I convey best wishes to all aspirants seeking

The Nagaland University Act was passed by the Parliament Vide No. 35.1989 and
established in 1994 as a Central University. The University has Kohima Campus at
Meriema, Agricultural (SAS) Campus at Medziphema, and Engineering & Technology
(SET) at Dimapur. The Headquarter has been functional since 2010 at Lumami,
Zunheboto. Currently, there are 6 (Six) Schools and 43 (Forty three) departments and 5
(Five) Centres.

Mission
“The University shall disseminate and advance knowledge by providing
instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to
make provision for integrated courses in humanities, natural and physical sciences,
social sciences, agricultural sciences, disciplines in the education and forestry and
other allied programmes of the university, and to take appropriate measures for
promoting innovations in teaching-learning process, inter-disciplinary studies and
research to educate and train manpower for the development of the state of Nagaland,
and to pay special attention to the improvement of the social economic conditions and
welfare of people of the state; their intellectual and cultural development”.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO PG PROGRAMME

It is the policy of the Nagaland University to offer equal educational opportunities to


all qualified persons, provided required conditions are fulfilled by the applicant:
1. Eligible students for Major streams (internally or externally) will be given
preference over General stream.
2. An applicant must have passed three-year Degree Course with Honours/Major
with 50% marks and for General Stream students of Arts, Commerce and Science
with 55% in the concerned subject in which admission is sought.
3. For admission to LL.M. course an applicant must have LL.B. degree with 55% of
marks under 10+2+3 pattern or Five years integrated course under 10+2+5
pattern.
4. 5% marks relaxation for SC/ST /OBC (NCL)/PwD category will be considered.
5. Applicants who have graduated from Colleges (Private/Govt./Autonomous)
affiliated to Nagaland University shall be entitled to 10% weight-age of Bonus
marks over others. For instance, a candidate who had passed out from any
College affiliated to Nagaland University with 60% marks in graduation will get
6% as additional weight- age and his/her total percentage will become 66%
while drawing the merit index of selection.
6. The number of seats available for admission to each Department will depend
upon seats authorized by the University.
7. Reservation Policy-Reservation in courses offered by Nagaland University shall
be as per the laid down norms/rules of GoI and Nagaland University.
Note:

1. Application for admission under sports ‘quota and Employees ‘quota should be
routed through the respective Head of Department and Departmental Admission
Committee in order of merit.
2. Only spouse/children of an employee of regular University may be included under
Employees ‘quota.
3. When the seats reserved for different categories are not filled, the same may be
allotted to the indigenous ST candidates. However, due care should be taken to
ensure that the eligibility of deserving candidates under various categories are
accommodated before the seats are allotted to indigenous STs.
4. For admission in M.Sc. (Anthropology) candidates with B.Sc. degree in Science
subjects (even without Anthropology) with an aggregate percentage of 50 or
more percentage from Nagaland University or any other UGC recognized
university shall be considered. However, candidates who have taken
Anthropology at UG level will be given preference.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO PhD PROGRAMME

1. Eligibility:
Subject to the conditions stipulated in the UGC Regulations and Ordinance of
Nagaland University, the following persons are eligible to seek admission to the
Ph.D programme:
i. Candidates for admission to the Ph.D programme shall have a Master’s Degree
or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by the
corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least55% marks in aggregate
or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a
point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree
from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and
Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an
authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any
other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing,
accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

ii. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of


grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/
Differently-abled and other categories of candidate as per the decision of the
Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s
Degree prior to 19th September 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (for an
equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and
the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based
only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

iii. Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. Course Work with at least 55%
marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an
equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and
successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to do research
work leading to the Ph.D Degree. A relaxation of 5% of marks from 55% to
50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging
to SC/ST/OBC (non- creamy layer)/ Differently-abled and other categories of
candidate as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
iv. A candidate, whose M.Phil. Dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce
is pending, may be admitted to the PhD programme of the same Institution.
v. Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an
Indian Institution, from a Foreign Institution accredited by an Assessment and
Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an
authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any
other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing
accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall
be eligible for admission to Ph.D programme.

2. Additional weight-age during the Selection Process:

i. Persons with M.Phil. Degree from Nagaland University.


ii. Candidates qualified in any of the National Eligibility Test (NET), recognized by
the UGC.
iii. Candidates with JRF.
iv. Candidates securing an average ‘A’ grade of 60% and above in the course work
of M.Phil Programme of Nagaland University.
v. Subject to availability of seats, candidates belonging to the following categories
and fulfilling the criteria stipulated under clause 1 above, may also be admitted
on the recommendation of the Department:
a. Regular employees of Nagaland University.
b. Teachers of colleges affiliated to Nagaland University with an experience of at
least Three (3) years of continuous service.
c. Persons with at least 9 (nine) years of experience in Administration,
Management and having specialized knowledge in the proposed field of
research to the satisfaction of the department concerned.
d. Persons who have completed at least one year of research in a
University/Institution after his/her registration, provisional or otherwise,
under the supervision of a teacher.

3. UGC Regulations/ Guideline sand Nagaland University Ordinance:

Procedure for the admission and award of Ph.D Degree shall be in accordance with
the UGC Minimum Standards and Procedure for award of Ph.D Degree Regulation
2022, and the Ordinance of Nagaland University. Subsequent amendments in the
University Ordinance/UGC guidelines, if any, shall be followed as and when such
changes are made/ notified.

4. Reservation Policy

Reservation in courses offered by Nagaland University shall be as per the laid down
norms/rules of GoI and Nagaland University.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO PG DIPLOMA & CERTIFICATE


COURSES

1. PG Diploma in Linguistics:
Bachelor Degree in any stream/subject from any UGC recognized
University/Institute having 45% marks for GEN./OBC category and 40% for
SC/ST category.

2. PG Diploma in Hindi Teaching:


Bachelor Degree in any stream/subject from any UGC recognized University/
Institute.

3. Certificate in Spoken English:


Minimum eligibility for admission shall be Higher Secondary.

4. PG Certificate in Spoken English & Writing Skills:


Minimum eligibility for admission shall be Bachelor Degree in any discipline.

5. One Year Diploma Course in Tenyidie:


Class 12 with knowledge of spoken Tenyidie.

6. Six Months Certificate in Tenyidie:


Class 12 with knowledge of spoken Tenyidie.

7. Three Months Diploma Course in Tenyidie for International Students:

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1. Applicants can apply ONLY through Online Mode of application.

2. Online Application Fee Payment:


i. All applicants must pay their application fees of Rs.200/-in case of General
category and Rs.150/-in case of SC/ST/OBC category through SBI-
iCollect/payment gate as specified in the online application form using Debit
card/Creditcard/NetBanking/UPI
(NO APPLICATION FEE SHALL BE REQUIRED FOR PWDS CANDIDATES)
A payment acknowledgment slip/receipt should be downloaded from the SBI-
iCollect for reference purposes. Transaction charges are not part of the Fee.
ii. Applicants are advised to make payment of the Application Fee before starting
to fill up the application form and keep the Payment reference number ready
during the process of filling up the online admission form.
iii. The Fee deposited through Credit Card/Debit Card/Net Banking/UPI in the SBI
I-Collect will normally reach the University account after 24 hrs. Hence, it is the
sole responsibility of the candidate to ensure that the fee is deposited well in
time. Nagaland University shall neither be responsible for any delay in receipt of
the payment nor shall be responsible, if the payment is refused or declined by
the Bank. Candidates are STRONGLY advised to submit the fee well before the
last date.
iv. All amount(s) paid by the Applicant, for application to the programme offered by
‘Nagaland University’ shall stand appropriated.
v. If applying to more than one department/program, separate application forms
need to be submitted as well as separate payments have to be made. The same
payment receipt should not be used for applying to more than one department.
If such cases are discovered, the application forms will be rejected without any
further communication to the applicant.

3. Online Application
i. Once the application fee payment process is over, applicants must go to
Nagaland University Online Application portal.
ii. Before getting into filling up of the Online Application form, candidates must
keep ready the Application Fee Payment Receipt for reference number, scanned
copies of passport photograph and documents (Academic documents,
SC/ST/OBC-Central & Non-Creamy/ Candidates from Jammu &
Kashmir/PWD/EWS as per applicability etc.) for uploading them.
iii. All required information should be correctly filled in the space provided.
iv. Appropriate document(s) must be uploaded against the queried information.

v. A candidate may apply separately to a maximum of three (03) relevant


departments by paying the Online Application fees separately. However,
admission can be taken ONLY in one Department, even though selected for
admission in more than one department.

4. Online Application Form Submission


i. Applicants must agree with the given declaration by choosing the options
provided on the Declaration by the Candidate box before clicking on the submit
button.
ii. It is important to take note that once applicants press the submit button, they
cannot alter/change anything under any circumstances. Therefore, applicants
are advised to be sure about the accuracy and relevancy of the given / uploaded
information before clicking the submit button.

5. Admission Test/Interview
Admission Test/Interview shall be conducted by the respective departments.
Related information shall be uploaded in the University website from time to time.
Applicants are instructed to keep regular watch for the same.
The University shall not be liable if an applicant fails to comply with the schedules.
6. Regarding Admission related matters, the decision of the Nagaland University
shall be final.

7. All dispute/litigation regarding admission related shall lie within the jurisdiction
of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench.

This course is designed to understand the various facets of Southeast Asia.The region has
multiplepolitical experiences. In cultural realm too, the region has several religious and ethical values,
and the civilizationalinfluences for millennia fromthe two great neighboring Indic and Sinic civilizations.
Despite these differences, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has successfully created and
expanded over the years, and it represents a common collective Southeast Asian identity. Moreover, this
course would also unfold the aspects of India – Southeast Asia relations as a result ofIndia’s Act East
Policy, with a particular focus on Northeast India.

letter, curriculum vitae and job application letter, communication within the office,
writing for presentation, drafting chapters of thesis with latest citation rules, using
critical terminology, concepts/ critical methods of analysis of literary texts.
Unit-IV Practical Criticism: Elongating concepts symbolically presented through pictures,
diagrams, sketches, etc. Interpreting literary, cultural, political, ethical, mythical
texts with postmodernist indeterminate meanings. Learning modes of interpreting

STUDENTS'AMENITIES

Hostel Accommodation
Hostel accommodation is available on limited basis for both men and women.
Application must be routedthroughthe respective Head of Department and submit the
same to the Dean Students' Welfare/Students Welfare in-charge to the respective
campus. Allotment of seats shall be on merit.

Library
TheUniversity Library, besides the libraries maintained insomeP.G.Departments,
contains about 35,318 volumes of books in different disciplines. It also subscribes 139
periodicals in English (both national & international).

Sports
The University gives due emphasis on sports and other extra-curricular activities.
There is a well-developed sports sectionheaded byDeputyDirector ofSportswithother
infrastructural supports for various activities, connected withgames and sports. The
Universitysports wing participates in intra-state and inter-state sports and games
events.

HealthCare
The University has HealthCenters which provide health-care facilities for allthe
students of the University communities in their respective campuses.

Gymnasium
Lumami has a separate gymnasium for both men and women.

Auditorium
Lumami has a 900 seating capacity Auditorium.

Internet facility
All the departments, library and hostels are well connected with internet/Wifi.
Transport
University plies buses from/to Mokokchung and Akuluto from/to HQ Lumami. Bus
facility is also available from Kohima to Meriema.
Cell to Eliminate Sexual Harassment: Nagaland University is committed to create
and maintain a community in which students, teachers and non-teaching staff can work
together in an environment free of violence, harassment, exploitation, intimidation and
stress. This includes all forms of gender violence, sexual harassment and
discrimination on the basis of sex/gender or amongst the same sex members. The
University is strongly in support of gender and opposes any form of gender
discrimination and violence. The Cell is headed by Professor B. Kilangla Jamir as the
Convener with sub-committee members from each Campus.

Anti-Ragging Measures: The University is committed to preventing ragging, and an anti-


ragging Committee has been constituted on each campus of the university in accordance
with the relevant Supreme Court guidelines.Ragging in all its forms is totally banned in the
entire institution, within the campus or outside, and as per the provisions of the Act of the
Central Government and the State Government, strict action shall be taken against those
found guilty of ragging and/or of abetting ragging.
Ragging is a cognizable offence under the law and is prohibited in all its forms

Equal Opportunity Cell: The University has Equal Opportunity Cell to facilitate the
deprived groups for learning and creating space to the mainstream providing
opportunities for them to be in the mainstream, at par with others. The Cell provides
coaching for ST/SC/OBC (non-Creamy layer) and minorities to enhance employment
opportunity.
SC/ST: The SC/ST Cellwas established to supervise the implementationofthe
Reservation Policy ofthe Government ofIndia. It assists in the conduct of various
coaching schemes for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and minority community
students.
Anti-Ragging: The University has Anti-Ragging Committee in all Campusesfor curbing
the menace of ragging in the University.
Grievance Redressal Cell: The University has appointed Nodal Officers foronline
Students Grievance Redressal Portal for curbing students' grievances.
Training and Placement Cell: Nagaland University has a 'Training and Placement Cell'
headed by a Faculty as in-Charge in each of the four campuses and for which a
Committee was constituted headed by a Senior Professor along with faculty-in-charge
in all the campuses as members.

NET Coaching for SC/ST/OBC: The University gives NET coaching to the SC/ST/OBC (Non-
Creamy layer) categories for enhancement of knowledge to appear for NET or SET
examination.
Students' Representative in University Academic Council: One Post-graduate
student from Science and one from Humanities & Education and one from Research
Scholars are selected on academic merit as per the ordinance of the University to
represent in the Academic Council.
Gender Champion: Nagaland University has selected four teachers as Nodal Teachers
(Campus-wise) to facilitate the activities in the respective campus of the University and
fourteen students as Gender Champions to create an environment that fosters
equaltreatment.
NSS Cell: The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a public service program under the
Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It aims to develop the
personality of students through community service and by promoting a sense of social
and civic responsibility. Nagaland University Kohima campus has two (2) units of NSS.
Students are encouraged to enroll in NSS voluntarily. NSS units organize a variety of
activities throughout the year like community service, Awareness Campaigns, Skill
Development, and Special Camps in which intensive community service activities must
be performed. These camps are often held in rural areas and may focus on themes such
as:

Cultural Club (NUKCM): For the holistic educational development of a learner, the Cultural Club
in Kohima Campus, Nagaland University, was set up to help the students keep in touch with the
cultural values, customs, and traditions of Nagaland. The aim of the club is not only to mould the
personality of the learners but also to cater to the creative needs of the students, promote
accessibility, and foster a dynamic cultural heritage that is preserved, used, and developed. The
club endeavour to work towards promoting a vibrant campus experience through organizing
innumerable activities pertaining to but not limited to the performing arts ans cultural activities.
The club’s objective is that by bringing people from all walks, interests, and ethnicities, the
learners would come together in ways that stimulate lifelong learning and community
interaction and thereby develop their intellectual, organizational and social skills.

Studnts' Union: Students' Union Election is conducted every year for selection of
Office bearers of the union.
