BACKGROUND

The Office of the Senior Citizen’s Affairs (OSCA) was established in

barangay Zone IV which is utilized by the entire elderly group, the

older population. They represented 8.66% of the calapan population

2020, people aged 60 years old and over are regarded as senior

citizens pursuant to the Republic Act No. 7432. They made up 8.66

percent (78,544 persons) of the household population of Oriental

Mindoro in 2020.The People aged over 60 years represented 12.4% of the

population in the year 2000, but that is expected to grow to be 19% of

the population by 2030. This means there will be more demand for

elderly care facilities in the coming years.

In year 2020 the percentage of senior citizen and Person with

Disability is 100% of all medical spending in the Calapan city base on

the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), 48% of

all Medicare spending, 19% of all non-Medicare spending for the poor.
Given the choice, most older adults would prefer to continue to live

in their homes (aging in place). Many elderly people gradually lose

functioning ability and require either additional assistance in the

home or a move to an eldercare facility. Their adult children often

find it challenging to help their elderly parents make the right

choices. Assisted living is one option for the elderly who need

assistance with everyday tasks. It costs less than nursing home care

but is still considered expensive for most people. Home care services

may allow seniors to live in their own home for a longer period of

time.

One relatively new service in the Philippines that can help keep older

people in their homes longer is respite care. This type of care

allows caregivers the opportunity to go on a vacation or a business

trip and to know that their family member has good quality temporary

care. Also, without this help the elder might have to move permanently

to an outside facility.
