A. Reviewing the previous lesson Alright class, before we Ma’am… our topic yesterday is
delve into another about main idea and supporting
interesting topic, can ideas.
anyone please share
their idea regarding our
topic yesterday?

Oh, that is very good.

Now can you tell me (Students answered)
what is a main idea and
what is a supporting
detail?

Very well said.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson Class, I want to ask you

to imagine yourself
reading a book about
nature and you want to
remember the most
important facts about (Students’ answers may vary)
nature. How can you find
the idea of each section
of the book?

C. Presenting lesson starters / mood setting The class will be divided

(Motivation Phase) into 4 groups for an
activity. Instructions will
be given for each group.
Each group will be given
a short passage where
they will underline the
sentences that made an
impression on them.

After 5 minutes…
Very good class! I am
pleased that everybody Ma’am we were given a sample
participated in the passage to underline the sentences
activity actively. Now… that made an impression to us. And
can anybody tell me I noticed that we were able to do
what was the activity the task.
about? Yes, Rosalie…

That was very good

Rosalie.

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing Before, moving on to our

new skills primary topic for today, I
(Presentation Phase) want you to read the (Students read the objectives)
learning objectives
displayed on the screen.

Let me now explain to

you how to recognize
idiomatic expressions.

Here are some effective

ways to help identify
idiomatic expressions:

1. Look for Unusual

or Non-Literal
Meaning.

If a phrase doesn’t make

sense when interpreted
literally (e.g., "kick the
bucket"), it’s likely an
idiom. Consider if the
words together might
mean something
different than their direct
meaning.

2. Common Patterns
and Structures:

Many idioms follow

common patterns, such
as verb + noun ("break
the ice") or verb +
preposition ("get over").
Recognizing these
patterns can signal that a
phrase might be an
idiom.

3. Identify Figurative
Language:

Idioms often use

metaphorical language,
where one thing
represents another (e.g.,
"time flies" doesn’t mean
literal flying, but that
time passes quickly).
Look for these figurative
expressions.
Identifying idiomatic
expressions can be
challenging, especially
for language learners,
because the meaning is
not always clear from the
individual words.

4. Familiarize
Yourself with
Common Idioms.

The more idioms you

learn, the easier it will be
to recognize new ones.
Practice by reading lists
of common idiomatic
expressions or engaging
with native speakers who
frequently use idioms.

5. Use Idiom
Dictionaries or
Online Resources.

If you come across a

phrase that seems
unfamiliar or odd, check
an idiom dictionary or
online resource to see if
it’s a recognized
idiomatic expression.
This can help build your
idiom knowledge over
time.

(Students’ answers may vary)

Now, how would these
now assist a reader in
recognizing an idiomatic
phrase?

(Student’s answer may vary)

Will these strategies help
a reader recognize an
idiomatic phrase?

E. Developing mastery (leads to Formative Class, I have here a list

Assessment) of idiomatic expressions
on one side of a
worksheet and their
meanings on the other
side. Your job is to
match the idiom with its
correct meaning.

Remember class this is a

group activity, that’s
why you can work in (Students answer)
pairs to create
sentences using each
idiom to ensure you both
understand how to apply
them in context. Yes, ma’am
Was the instruction clear
class?

F. Finding practical application of concepts Now class, I want you to

and skills in daily living. listen carefully because I (Students answer)
(Application – Assessment Phase) will read these idiomatic
expressions, in each
sentence

Once I’m done reading, I

want you to raise your
hand and share your (Students answer)
thoughts with the class
about the meaning of
each idiom next to the
sentence according to
your idea.

G. Integrating Values Every time we encounter

(Integration Phase) and recognize idiomatic
expressions can
enhance students'
understanding and
appreciation of these
expressions while also
promoting ethical,
cultural, and social
awareness. This helps
students appreciate the
diversity of language.

Do you think ,class,

having all these will help
you be a better listener (Students’ answers may vary?
or a better person
perhaps?

H. Making generalization and abstractions Of all the discussions

about the lesson and activities given, how (Students’ answers may vary)
can you identify and
recognize idiomatic
expressions

V. EVALUATION Class, I will give you

(Evaluation Phase) another sample text
wherein you will be
tasked to write a (Students answer)
sentence or a phrase
and include some
idiomatic terms. You will
submit your answers on
a whole sheet of paper.

VI. ASSIGNMENT Write a sentence or

(Remediation / Establishing learner’s study habits))
short paragraph for each
idiom that shows how it
might be used in a real-
life context. Make sure
the idiom's meaning is
clear from the context of
the sentence.
