Introduction:
Nurturing the environment and engaging in volunteer work are essential
in today’s society. During my experience with the CDP Project assigned
by LPU, I uncovered my enthusiasm for assisting the community and
promoting awareness about waste management, plastic reduction, and
the significance of afforestation. I completed the CDP Project from
LPU, exploring various sectors of society to learn about different waste
disposal and management techniques, as well as introducing alternatives
to plastic. I began my efforts toward fostering a cleaner and greener
environment. Collaborating with Daswandh NGO has been one of my
most rewarding experiences to date. I forged new connections and
networks, and most importantly, gained valuable insights into the
importance of caring for our planet.

Joining Daswandh NGO was an incredible opportunity for me. I

discovered this organization through Internshala, which offered
volunteering opportunities focused on waste management in local
communities and various workshops. After reaching out to them
regarding the CDP project, they welcomed me to their team. The NGO
provided me with valuable resources and guidance, and I was assigned
to a team in my area. In addition to contributing to the community, I also
developed many skills, particularly in teamwork.

About Need of volunteering in NGO for waste management and

Afforestation:

In recent years, the global community has increasingly acknowledged

the vital importance of environmental sustainability and the need for
effective waste management solutions. The buildup of waste presents
significant threats to our ecosystems and quality of life, highlighting the
crucial role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on
waste management. These organizations depend not only on their
committed staff but also on the invaluable contributions of volunteers
who actively engage in waste management initiatives. This report aims
to provide a thorough overview of volunteering within a waste
management NGO, highlighting its significance, benefits, and the
positive effects it has on both individuals and the environment.

Today’s society is experiencing unprecedented levels of waste

generation due to factors like population growth, urbanization, and
unsustainable consumption habits. Effectively managing this
overwhelming amount of waste requires collaborative efforts and
innovative strategies that go beyond the capabilities of local authorities
alone. NGOs dedicated to waste management play a critical role by
offering specialized expertise, advocating for change, and mobilizing
communities to address this complex challenge. Within these
organizations, volunteers are essential to the workforce, generously
contributing their time, skills, and enthusiasm to foster positive change.
Volunteering in waste management NGOs involves much more than just
waste collection. Volunteers engage in a variety of activities, including
waste segregation, recycling campaigns, awareness drives, community
outreach programs, and environmental education initiatives. Their
involvement not only aids in waste reduction and efficient management
but also helps foster a culture of sustainability within communities.

Participating in volunteering opportunities with waste management

NGOs offers numerous benefits on both individual and collective levels.
For volunteers, it provides a chance to develop new skills, gain practical
knowledge about waste management techniques, and enhance their
understanding of environmental issues. Additionally, volunteering
cultivates a sense of empowerment as individuals see the tangible impact
of their efforts and become part of a broader movement aimed at
creating a cleaner and greener future.

Communities also benefit significantly from the active participation of

volunteers in waste management initiatives. Through these efforts,
NGOs can reach larger audiences, raise awareness about sustainable
waste practices, and instill a sense of environmental responsibility in
local populations. Moreover, the combined efforts of volunteers help
reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, conserve natural resources,
and prevent pollution, ultimately leading to healthier and more
sustainable living environments.

This report will delve into key aspects of volunteering in waste

management NGOs, including the roles and responsibilities of
volunteers, the challenges they may encounter, and the strategies used to
ensure their effective contributions. Additionally, it will showcase
success stories and best practices from notable waste management
NGOs, highlighting the transformative impact of volunteering in
tackling the global waste crisis.

By underscoring the importance of volunteering in waste management

NGOs, this report seeks to inspire individuals, communities, and
policymakers to appreciate the value of volunteer engagement and
promote initiatives that encourage active participation in waste
management efforts. Together, we can work towards a future where
waste is minimized, resources are conserved, and our planet thrives in
harmony.

Work Done:

Week 1 :

On our first day, we were welcomed via Zoom by Mr. Gangadhar

Pandey, who hosted a lecture introducing us to the NGO. He provided
insights into how the organization operates, its achievements, future
expectations, and how we would contribute. The session gave us a clear
understanding of the NGO's mission and the valuable opportunity we
had to be part of it.

Mr. Pandey discussed various societal aspects and waste management,

highlighting the impact of global warming on our planet. He shared
knowledge about different plastic alternatives introduced by the
government and other organizations, emphasizing how we could raise
awareness in our communities about these alternatives and the
importance of using biodegradable materials. He also recounted past
events the NGO had organized and explained the roles and
responsibilities of the staff, providing us with the necessary resources to
begin our volunteering journey.

He guided us through the skills we would develop, such as utilizing

plastic alternatives, managing events, maintaining discipline, and
balancing our studies with our volunteer work. Additionally, he taught
us marketing strategies to ensure the success of events and how to
engage our family and friends in educating the community about global
warming and waste management concerns.

He provided us with access to Canva and various Adobe editors to create

posters for our campaigns and design templates. Additionally, he gave
us fundamental knowledge about using social media platforms like
Instagram and Facebook to promote local events through SEO and SMO
techniques, as well as guidance on how to upload our posters and
templates for advertising.

By the end of the first week, we had all the resources we needed to begin
our work. We were introduced to the LGO team and the group of
volunteers we would be collaborating with. We were assigned different
areas of the city where we would spread awareness and volunteer for the
campaign.

WEEK 2:

Since I couldn’t collaborate with a teammate during this phase, I took on

the responsibility of maintaining my neighborhood park. Equipped with
cleaning supplies, I diligently collected discarded papers and litter
scattered across the green space. To improve the park's aesthetic, I
carefully trimmed the overgrown grass, giving the area a refreshed
appearance. I also ensured the park's natural beauty was preserved by
removing any harmful debris from the trees. To document my efforts
and showcase the park's transformation, I took before-and-after
photographs, which I later shared with Daswandh NGO.
Taking on this task alone required a heightened awareness of safety
protocols. The potential health risks from the waste, including exposure
to diseases and bacteria, necessitated careful precautions. To maximize
my impact, I focused on cleaning high-traffic areas in the city. Given my
limited resources, I prioritized key public spaces such as parks, traffic
signals, and major junctions. Working solo required efficient time
management and a strategic approach, allowing me to transform these
areas into cleaner, more inviting spaces. At the same time, I utilized
posters, charts, and slogans to educate passersby about the importance of
waste management and environmental conservation.

The solitary nature of this endeavor presented unique challenges but also
offered unparalleled opportunities for personal growth. Witnessing the
positive impact of my efforts, even on a small scale, was incredibly
rewarding. The transformation of these public spaces highlighted the
power of individual action. As news of my initiative spread, I began to
inspire others, particularly young people who expressed interest in
joining the cause. Their enthusiasm motivated me to work with even
greater dedication.

While the journey was demanding, the rewards were immeasurable.

Knowing that my actions contributed to a cleaner and healthier
environment filled me with a profound sense of purpose.

WEEK 3:
The next part was the growing trees and making the earth more greener .
So we collected all the resources provided from the NGO including the
different farming kits and we were started planting trees in our local
areas. It was difficult but we tried our best to find free space in the local
areas to plant trees.
And to make it more safe and healthier we put saplings into an iron and
steel jars around it to protect it from the different animals like cow dogs
and to keep our plants safe we regularly for the next coming one or two
weeks we started giving them water and we started taking care of that
we added fertilizers and manuals to the crop to make it healthier.

On Sunday morning we went and distributed different land samplings to

the local public of different park sectors and different areas so they were
happy at the end getting samplings and making it more greener like so
they can plant that same things into their houses in pots where they can
take care of that plant and helping our nature to grow more.

Literally we were happy from inside for doing this global cause for
society and to spread love by distribution of plants seeds to people of
society and to clean the different sectors of society.

WEEK 4:
By week four, our journey had been quite enriching as we progressed
through training, acquired resources, and gained knowledge about
various sectors of society. We learned about the harmful effects of
materials like plastic, rubber, and waste, as well as how to mitigate these
issues by introducing alternatives. All the insights and information we
received from our mentors and the NGO leaders were invaluable.
Ultimately, we culminated our training by conducting local campaign
events.
After working towards the nature of we were awarded the certificate for
the work we had done and for time we have contributed towards society
with NGO.

Why Plastic removal from society is important?

1. Environmental Impact: Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to
ecosystems, wildlife, and natural habitats. When plastic waste enters
water bodies like oceans, rivers, and lakes, it contaminates marine
environments. Marine animals and birds often mistake plastic debris for
food, leading to entanglement, ingestion, and harmful effects. By
removing plastic from the environment, we can mitigate these negative
impacts and protect fragile ecosystems.

2. Human Health Concerns: Plastic pollution not only harms the

environment but also endangers human health. As plastics break down,
they can release toxic chemicals that contaminate soil, water sources,
and the food chain. These chemicals can disrupt hormones, cause
reproductive issues, and increase the risk of certain diseases. Removing
plastic waste helps reduce potential exposure to these harmful
substances, safeguarding public health.
3. Aesthetic and Economic Value: Plastic pollution detracts from the
aesthetic appeal of landscapes, beaches, and public spaces. The
accumulation of plastic debris creates an unattractive and unpleasant
environment, negatively impacting overall quality of life. Furthermore,
plastic pollution can harm tourism, a crucial income source for many
regions, as visitors are discouraged by polluted beaches and degraded
natural areas. By removing plastic waste, we can restore the beauty of
our surroundings and protect economic opportunities linked to tourism.

4. Conservation of Resources: Plastics are made from valuable resources

like petroleum and natural gas. By removing and managing plastic waste
properly, we contribute to the conservation of these finite resources.
Recycling and reusing plastics reduces the demand for new materials,
leading to energy savings and a smaller carbon footprint associated with
plastic production.

5. Mitigating Climate Change: The production, disposal, and

incineration of plastics contribute to greenhouse gas emissions,
exacerbating climate change. Effective plastic waste removal and
management can help lower these emissions and lessen the
environmental impact of plastic-related activities. Promoting recycling
and transitioning to sustainable alternatives further reduces carbon
emissions tied to plastic production.

6. Behavioral Change and Awareness: Plastic removal initiatives raise

awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution, encouraging
individuals and communities to adopt more sustainable practices. By
actively participating in plastic removal, we cultivate a sense of
environmental responsibility and inspire others to join the movement.
This collective effort can lead to a broader societal shift towards reduced
plastic consumption, better waste management practices, and the
promotion of sustainable alternatives.

India current status of waste management and

plastic removal.

An overview of the current status of waste management and plastic

removal in India:

Waste Management:
India faces considerable challenges in waste management due to its large
population and rapid urbanization. The country generates a significant
amount of solid waste daily, and inadequate infrastructure coupled with
limited resources hinders effective waste management. Nevertheless, the
Indian government, along with various stakeholders, is actively working
to enhance waste management practices.

1. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission): Launched in 2014,

this nationwide campaign aims to create a clean and open-defecation-
free India. It includes initiatives for waste management, such as
constructing household and community toilets, establishing solid waste
management infrastructure, and conducting behavior change campaigns.

2. Waste Segregation and Management Rules: The Solid Waste

Management Rules, 2016, highlight the necessity of waste segregation at
the source and provide guidelines for effective waste management
practices. These rules require the segregation of waste into categories
such as biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and hazardous waste,
facilitating proper disposal and recycling processes.
3. Waste-to-Energy Projects: The Indian government has been
promoting the development of waste-to-energy projects, which convert
non-recyclable waste into energy through methods like incineration and
anaerobic digestion. These initiatives aim to decrease the amount of
waste sent to landfills while harnessing energy from waste materials.

Plastic Removal:
India has recognized the detrimental impact of plastic pollution and has
taken steps to address the issue. Efforts have been made to curb theusage
of single-use plastics and promote sustainable alternatives. Here are
some notable initiatives:

1. Plastic Waste Management Rules: The Plastic Waste Management

Rules, 2016, provide comprehensive guidelines for the management,
collection, segregation, and recycling of plastic waste. The rules also
place responsibilities on manufacturers, retailers, and consumers to
reduce plastic waste and promote recycling practices.

2. Ban on Single-Use Plastics: Several states and cities in India have

implemented bans on single-use plastics, including items like carry bags,
disposable cutlery, and thermocol products. These bans aim to reduce
the consumption of single-use plastics and encourage the adoption of
eco-friendly alternatives.

3. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): The concept of Extended

Producer Responsibility has been implemented for plastic waste
management. It holds manufacturers accountable for the collection and
recycling of the plastic packaging they produce. This approach
encourages manufacturers to adopt more sustainable packaging materials
and systems.

4. Promotion of Alternatives: Efforts are underway to promote

alternatives to single-use plastics, such as cloth bags, paper bags, and
biodegradable packaging materials. Awareness campaigns and behavior
change initiatives are being carried out to encourage individuals and
businesses to embrace these alternatives and reduce their reliance on
plastic.

It's important to note that the status of waste management and plastic
removal in India is subject to change, with new policies and initiatives
being introduced since my knowledge cutoff in September 2021. I
recommend referring to recent government reports and updates for the
most up-to-date information on the current status of waste management
and plastic removal in India.
What are plastic alternatives and how they are
brought in India Market?

Plastic alternatives, also known as sustainable alternatives or substitutes,

are materials or products specifically designed to replace conventional
plastics. These alternatives aim to mitigate the negative environmental
impact associated with plastic production, use, and disposal. In India,
various approaches have been adopted to introduce plastic alternatives to
the market:

1. Biodegradable and Compostable Materials: Biodegradable materials,

including certain bio-based plastics and plant-based fibers, are
formulated to naturally decompose in the environment over time.
Compostable materials, on the other hand, can be converted into
compost through industrial composting processes. These alternatives
offer a more environmentally friendly option as they have the
potential to reduce waste accumulation and minimize the persistence
of plastic in the environment.
2. Paper and Cardboard: Paper and cardboard products have long been
used as alternatives to plastic. They are renewable, recyclable, and
biodegradable, making them a popular choice for packaging, bags, and
disposable food containers. Paper-based alternatives are often favored
due to their lower environmental impact and recyclability.

3. Plant-based Materials: Various plant-based materials such as bagasse

(sugarcane waste), bamboo, and palm leaf are being utilized as
alternatives to plastic. These materials are renewable, biodegradable, and
can be sourced sustainably. They are commonly employed for
disposable cutlery, plates, bowls, and food packaging.

4. Natural Fiber and Cloth: Natural fibers like jute, cotton, hemp, and
sisal are being increasingly used as alternatives to plastic in various
applications. Cloth bags made from cotton or other durable fabrics have
gained popularity as alternatives to single-use plastic bags. These
materials are reusable, biodegradable, and have a lower environmental
impact compared to conventional plastics.

5. Innovative Materials: Researchers and innovators are continually

developing new materials as alternatives to plastics. For instance,
ongoing efforts are focused on creating biodegradable plastics from
algae, fungi, and other organic sources. These innovative materials aim
to provide similar functionality to traditional plastics while being more
environmentally friendly.

The introduction of plastic alternatives in the Indian

market is facilitated through various means:

a. Government Policies and Regulations: The Indian government has

implemented regulations and guidelines to promote the use of plastic
alternatives and discourage the utilization of single-use plastics. These
policies include banning certain types of plastic products and promoting
sustainable alternatives through extended producer responsibility (EPR)
programs.

b. Industry Initiatives: Numerous companies and organizations in India

are actively involved in the development and promotion of plastic
alternatives. They invest in research and development, collaborate with
material scientists, and engage in product innovation to bring sustainable
alternatives to the market.

c. Consumer Demand and Awareness: Increasing consumer awareness

about the adverse impacts of plastics has generated a demand for eco-
friendly alternatives. Consumer preferences for sustainable options have
encouraged businesses to offer plastic alternatives, leading to their
availability in the market.

d. Startups and Entrepreneurship: India has witnessed the emergence of

startups and entrepreneurial ventures focused on developing and
commercializing plastic alternatives. These innovative companies
introduce new materials, products, and packaging solutions to the
market, catering to the demand for sustainable alternatives.

Overall, the introduction of plastic alternatives in the Indian market is

driven by a combination of government initiatives, industry efforts,
consumer demand, and entrepreneurial innovation. These alternatives
offer more sustainable options, aiming to reduce plastic pollution and
foster a greener future.

If Plastic use won’t be control in India, then?

If plastic use is not effectively controlled in India, it can lead to a range

of detrimental consequences. Here are some potential outcomes to
consider:
1. Environmental Pollution: Unregulated plastic use contributes to
significant environmental pollution. Single-use plastics, in particular,
accumulate in landfills, rivers, lakes, and oceans, posing a grave threat to
ecosystems and wildlife. Since plastic takes hundreds of years to
decompose, it leads to long-term pollution and habitat degradation.

2. Health Risks: Plastic pollution poses risks to human health. Toxic

chemicals present in plastics can leach into the environment,
contaminating soil, water sources, and the food chain. Exposure to these
chemicals can result in various health issues, including hormonal
disruptions, reproductive problems, developmental disorders, and an
elevated risk of certain diseases.

3. Drain on Resources: Plastic production relies on finite resources such

as petroleum and natural gas. If plastic use remains unchecked, it will
intensify the strain on these resources, depleting them rapidly and
increasing dependence on non-renewable energy sources. This has long-
term implications for energy security and sustainability.

4. Waste Management Challenges: Improper disposal of plastic waste

overwhelms existing waste management systems. Inadequate
infrastructure and limited resources make it challenging to collect, sort,
and dispose of plastic waste effectively. Consequently, littering
increases, drainage systems get clogged, and plastic waste gets released
into the environment.

5. Economic Impact: Plastic pollution negatively affects tourism, as

visitors are deterred by polluted beaches and degraded natural
surroundings. Since tourism is a significant source of revenue and
employment in many regions of India, uncontrolled plastic use can result
in economic losses and hinder the growth of the tourism industry.

6. Climate Change Contribution: The production, incineration, and

improper disposal of plastics contribute to greenhouse gas emissions,
exacerbating climate change. Plastics are derived from fossil fuels, and
their manufacturing process releases carbon dioxide and other harmful
gases. Furthermore, plastic waste in landfills generates methane, a potent
greenhouse gas. Failing to control plastic use will contribute to increased
carbon emissions and climate-related challenges.

To mitigate these potential consequences, it is crucial to implement

effective measures to control plastic use in India. This includes the
enforcement of strict regulations, promotion of sustainable alternatives,
encouragement of waste reduction and recycling, raising public
awareness, and fostering a culture of responsible consumption and waste
management. By taking proactive steps to address plastic pollution,
India can work towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
Challenges Faced:

● The natural and was the summers the heat of the sun as he was we
have to do certain times we have to do things in the hot summer so
it was quite irritating and I we felt so lazy at the time so it was hard
time for us to do things but whatever the condition was we want to
because that thing has become a passion we want to serve our
mother earth. so just be over tackled this situation by taking cold
water, Cold butter milk and other liquid substances to which stand
in summers.

● Have a nice challenge was taking care of plants and sampling we

saw in the ground in all the public places because there were many
Prey animals roaming here and there they can eat a plant so we
have to keep that plants safe so we just have to arrange the iron
cases for the power plants and sampling to keep them safer from
the animals like cows and other animals. this was one of the
hardest hours we have done because to to arrange all the iron cages
of the soil without damaging the plant was such a hard task but
finally we did it with follow our efforts and enthusiasm.
● What are the biggest challenge was the online classes like the
internet connectivity sometimes due to hindrance of internet
connectivity we were not able to listen what they were saying but
eventually things got created at the good because he also provided
the written notes and reports provided by them so we just read
them and we get to know that what was the summary of that
lecture.

● As you were new to this field of planting trees and working with
the tools. So in the starting days we were facing some challenges
regarding how to using the tools of farming and how to you do the
things at exactly the they have talked us and so we were just
learning in that days and eventually we become more and more
expert in that not the professional but we can say like we just get a
hands-on on that tools that how to use them how to plug the waste
plants from the nearby and so the good plants in that area.

● Our next challenge was the educating people in a huge amount like
when the people joined a team there was a use Chaos and violent
able to manage the things according to a blueprint because we
never had done this before so we just gradually grow more
everyday that we learnt things and active face challenges so that
we brought some my some papers some charge on which the rules
were being returned on which like different types of course where
vetan so that the people can read it and get knowledge more about
it we gone and help one by one to each and every newbie to the
speed at how to use the tools and the farming kit and we get the
knowledge about different types of trees agriculture methods
which way we were being taught by the members of the NGO.
● As we are just in first year so it was difficult to talk to different
people and other members of society and to explain them about the
plastic alternatives available in the society so we started working
on our communication skills we got to know from our team heads
what particular words we should use to pitch the people to donate
for the social cause and then we started with a campaign we
collected a good amount of donations from people and we learned
a lot of stuff about communication skills and intellectual skills.

● When you’re picking up ways from the roadsides and bus stations
and different public areas it was difficult for us to cope up with the
smell coming from that garbage and many of the other volunteers
health was affecting due to that garbage and there was a threat to
get affected by some disease so we tried to maintain all possible
precautions to safeguard us from the bacteria’s and disease from
that garbage and we used gloves and different masks to save us
from disease.
Learning outcomes:

● Firstly we learnt about how a NGO works how all the members co-
ordinate with each other as a team in events and campaign like
how the guide people according to weight how they manage Their
employees and how the workers and how the manage different
types of interns in different fields of working.

● We learnt a lot about marketing and how to make a normal event

small event a grand success how to turn a small event in small
steps into a big company how to make a people aware of the events
happening around them and how to increase the interested
audience in a particular group a particular area and how to
entertain them with a good communication skills and with good
content and with good teaching skills. we learnt a lot about the
social gathering customer care and have been in the about Big
organisation that WHO and other United Nation organisation how
they are organising such events will be the from world's are
coming and participating.

● The next thing we learn about how to create a small event into a
grand success by the use of digital marketing Marketing by
physical marketing and marketing the pamphlets and your help of
team members and how to communicate efficiently with all the
other society members and how to make a bag of the public who
are interested in this field how to gather them at one place how to
arrange things how to arrange building everything was being
caused by them and we learn in an efficient way.

● The next thing we learn was about sustainable agricultural

practices, different types of agricultural practices happening in
different types of civilization different states and different
countries of the world we learnt about different types of farming
practices in our India and told different parts of world how people
live their life and how they use to practice the older times of
farming methods and how the technology care their life and how
we can inculcate those techniques in our daily life.

● We got some instructions about how to use a kit of farming how to

plant tree saplings and avoid damaging the saplings, how to use
different types of fertilizers and manure which are organic and not
harmful to our soil and for the plants and how to make a plants and
trees grow and to keep them safe by using different ways for
example using iron cage or different types of pesticides around and
so they not been attacked by the big animals or the microbial
insects.

● When you organize the event for all public and Society members
to win participate and challenges like to make them perform task
discipline to educate them what to do what not to do discrete-time
if attack and about how to use the kids and I to make the things go
well without any interaction so this was also challenge and that we
learnt about the company and some managerial skills.

● We learn about time management how to manage time between

our different studies mooc courses and this noble world so and
how to make us productive by using less time and do more work.

● And for every work discipline is really needed and some other
extras like leadership and team management so as we were divided
into certain teams for particular areas we learned a lot of things
like how to guide other team members how to listen to the leaders
and how to be in discipline and by following the rules only things
can be done smoothly other than that there are problems so this
was all things what we learnt from this campaign and volunteer
work.

● Critical thinking was a scale we learned during volunteer ship

work and our internship work because at time of events like
campaigns we created charts we need and with team viewer
working different problem arises so we thought critically about the
situation came up with the solution and acted upon it whether like
failure or success but we thought about the current situation and
we came up with different ideas about solutions of their problems
so at the end we learn something about how to make solutions and
how to think about solution not focusing about the problem and
critical thinking was the scale we got from this event.

Conclusion:
I am very happy for this invaluable opportunity we got from LPU to
engage in social work, which has not only allowed me to experience a
new facet of life but also helped me discover my passion for societal
betterment. Through this project, I aimed to raise awareness about
critical issues such as waste management, plastic removal, and the
urgent need for increased afforestation.

During my tenure, I engaged with various sections of society, gaining

insights into different waste disposal and management methods, and
exploring alternatives to plastic. This journey marked the beginning of
my commitment to fostering a clean and green environment.

Working with Daswand NGO has been one of the most enriching
experiences of my life. I forged new connections, expanded my network,
and, most importantly, gained a deeper understanding of our societal
conditions and the importance of sustainable practices.

I hope this will help me so much in my future to become more vigilant

when it comes to man
