Lubricants and fluids

Lubricants and fluids are:

• lubricants (e.g., axle oils, hydraulic oils, lubricating grease, etc.)
• and antifreeze products, coolants.

G ATTENTION
Lubricants are harmful to health, as they contain toxic and caustic components and are highly
flammable.
For this reason, please observe the following instructions to prevent potential injuries to yourself
and others:

• Do not inhale vapors. Indoors, make sure that there is always enough ventilation to avoid
poisoning;

• Lubricants should not come into contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. In case of contact, clean
the affected skin areas with water and soap to prevent burns and other injuries;

• In the case of contact with the eyes, wash them thoroughly using a lot of clean water;

• If a lubricant is ingested, seek medical attention immediately;

• Change out of clothing contaminated with lubricants immediately to reduce the risk of fire and
potential injuries;

• Do not approach open flames, have unprotected lit bulbs, or smoke while handling lubricants.

14 Vehicle Maintenance Considerations
Vehicle Maintenance Considerations

Vehicle maintenance
To ensure your vehicle's safe operation, perform the recommended maintenance services
at the specified intervals according to the vehicle's maintenance category.
Always entrust the recommended maintenance services to a Mercedes-Benz Dealer or
Authorized Service Center.
The repair services are not included in the services listed in the maintenance plan, and,
when necessary, the repairs must be carried out using a separate service order.
Maintenance service intervals are organized in tables based on the vehicle model and
maintenance category.
Drive Axle Oil Change
Drive axle oil change should occur within the timeframes indicated in the respective
maintenance and oil change interval tables or at least every year, whichever comes first.
The damages resulting from not changing the oil or from exceeding the indicated periods
will not be covered by the vehicle warranty.

In certain instances, the oil change intervals for the major assemblies (drive axles) may
not align with the regular maintenance service intervals.
If the scheduled oil change is earlier than the maintenance service interval M, perform the
oil change within the specified interval to maximize major assembly durability.
When the scheduled oil change date is later than the scheduled maintenance service
intervals M, it is up to the customer to decide whether to respect the specified interval to
maximize the use of the lubricant or to anticipate the oil change by performing the service
along with the maintenance services to avoid additional vehicle downtime.
Note:
In some cases, there is the option to adjust the major assembly oil change interval
based on the type of lubricant used.
Only use recommended lubricants according to the major assembly type.
Refer to the approved lubricants on the website:
operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com

Before performing maintenance work, always consult the technical documentation, such as the

Vehicle Maintenance Considerations 15

Maintenance services and oil change confirmation

The Mercedes-Benz Dealer or Authorized Service Center must record the maintenance
and oil change services performed by them in the respective confirmation fields of this
manual.
Mercedes-Benz Genuine Parts and Accessories
To ensure maximum durability and operational safety of your vehicle, use only Mercedes-
Benz genuine parts and accessories.
Customer Responsibilities
Checks related to the daily inspection are the responsibility of the Customer/Driver and,
therefore, are not included in the periodic maintenance services of the vehicle.
Daily inspection should be carried out by the driver before starting vehicle operation.
G
Should any irregularity be detected during the daily inspection, with cannot be
corrected by the Customer/Driver himself, direct the vehicle to a Mercedes-Benz
Dealer or Qualified Workshop to perform the needed repairs.

Third-Party Installed Body and Additional Equipment Maintenance Services

To ensure the safe operation of your vehicle, it's important to perform regular
maintenance services for body and additional equipment installed by third parties,
following the respective manufacturers' instructions.

Compressed-Air System Oil Separator and Air Drier

To ensure proper dehumidification and effective oil separation from the compressed air
produced by the air compressor, it's essential to replace the cartridge of the air drier
element and oil separator within the compressed-air system at the prescribed intervals as
recommended in the vehicle maintenance schedule. Cleaning the air drier and oil
separator elements is strictly prohibited.
Reusing the compressed-air drier cartridge and oil separator, using non-approved or
unspecified cartridges, or replacing the compressed air drier element and oil separator
cartridge with unauthorized products at the recommended intervals, can compromise the
efficiency of air dehumidification and oil separation from the compressor, leading to
serious damage to your brake system components.
Use only Mercedes-Benz genuine air drier element and oil separator cartridges.

Before performing maintenance work, always consult the technical documentation, such as the
G ATTENTION Operator's and Maintenance Manuals. Send the vehicle to a Mercedes-Benz Dealer or Qualified
Workshop to carry out the maintenance services within the prescribed intervals. Performing
maintenance work reduces fault occurrence of malfunctions that can result in accidents.
16 Vehicle Maintenance Considerations

Wheels' hubs
Lubricating grease in the rear axle wheel hubs must be changed strictly as indicated in the
maintenance interval tables or every 6 years, whichever comes first.

G Attention
Missing the wheel hubs maintenance can cause premature wear of the bearings, distinguished by
their noisy operation, and even the unexpected bearings blocking with risk of wheel detaching
that can result in accidents of unpredictable consequences.
Note that on determined exceptional operating conditions, the wheel hubs' lubricating grease
change intervals must be reduced for vehicles used every day but with a too low average
kilometer reading.

Tire Rotation
Tire rotation is a recommended procedure to ensure even tread wear.
Tire rotation should be performed at least every 10,000 km. However, as tires wear is
influenced by several variable factors according to the operating conditions, this interval
can be re-assessed by the Customer with a tire manufacturer designee and adapted to the
vehicle using conditions.
Nut and Screw Tightening

G ATTENTION
The tightening check and, if necessary, the tightening of the mounting nuts and screws of some
chassis components is essential to compensate for the parts' seating and to preserve the vehicle's
circulation safety. Tightening checks and any necessary retightening of nuts and screws should be
performed at the intervals indicated in the vehicle maintenance schedule. Additionally, wheel
fastening nuts and U-bolt clamps for leaf springs (vehicles with steel suspension) require
additional checks and retightening at the intervals indicated below.
Not carrying out this service of checking and re-tightening the mounting nuts and screws at the
recommended intervals can result in the chassis' component detaching and cause an accident
with severe or death injuries.

Wheels fastening nuts:

• 1st inspection and re-tightening: 50 km;
• 2nd inspection and re-tightening: 1,000 km;
• subsequent checks and retightening: as indicated on the maintenance schedule.
G
In the case of repairs, the intervals indicated for the inspections and occasional re-
tightening operations of nuts and screws refer to the distance covered by the vehicle
after the assemblage of the respective component.
