The lesson Birth is an extract from “The Citadel “ that talks about Andrew Manson who was just
a medical practitioner and graduated from medical school. He helped Susan and Joe to give
birth to their child and during all this, he was having a tough time with his beloved Christine.

When Joe and Andrew reached Morgan’s house, he found that Susan was in severe condition
and a midwife was helping her out. He also took his time to understand the case. He wants to
focus on the patient and so he diversifies his mind and thinks about his other friends who were
also having disturbed relations with their partners.
After that, he put aside all the things and just wanted to focus on Susan Morgan as she lied
under anesthesia. Early in the morning, she delivered a child and soon the doctor noticed that it
was lifeless. After a long hour of struggle, he was shocked. Soon he saw that the mother was
left unconscious and both of them needed urgent treatment. Now, he was left with the choice
as to whom he should attend first.
He chose the mother as she was left unconscious and he injected some medicines. As soon as
she gained some strength, Andrew now ordered the nurse to bring some hot and cold water.
Andrew scrutinized the child who was pale and lifeless. At first, he was not able to detect that
the case was of asphyxia and the child has low oxygen levels in its blood. If he could he can give
up on the child, but he did not and with his sheer determination he juggled up the child in hot
and cold water.
He knew that it was very important for the couple. He again started by rubbing a towel at the
back of the child and also tried to fill some air. After a long hour of battle, the little child gave a
motion and started breathing. As soon as the child started crying, Andrew heaved a sigh of relief
and he felt that he had done something big that day. He soon told Joe that all is well. He told
everything related to the complications of the operation to the Morgan’s and left the house with
great satisfaction and feeling that he has done a great job.

Andrew had once seen a similar case in the samaritan and so he knew how to deal here and
used that same therapy with his patient. So, he ordered the midwife to bring hot and cold water
and juggled up the child and after that rubbed the child’s back with a towel.

Andrew Manson was a young medical practitioner who had just completed college. He was
assistant to Dr. Edward Page and he was in love with a school teacher, Christine. His heart was
overflowing with many emotions and considered marriage as a peaceful and cheerful bond. He
was mature enough and kept his personal issues far away and dealt with the patient’s problem.
He knows his responsibility and even after remaining in dilemma for some time, he managed to
control and gave the best to save both lives.
He with his hard work and sheer determination saved the child and his mother who was
delivering it after 20 long years of marriage. He knew that the child was important to the couple.
On the whole, he was a dedicated doctor who managed to keep his personal affairs at far and
does whatever he can do.
He injected some medicines and worked hard to revive the mother as she was lying helpless
and unconscious. Her heart was given some strength to gain and she was breathing softly the
next moment.
Conclusion
To sum up, the story was about the dedicated doctor who kept aside his feelings and sour
memories of heated arguments with his beloved. He focussed his attention on the mother and
reviving her lifeless child. The child was important to the couple as it was being delivered and
coming after 20 years of marriage. He with his determination and hard work saved two lives and
gain confidence as he had done a great job that day.
