Instructor: Marylou Zapf [email protected] Section 02: MWF 10-10:50 (Jones 306)
Office/Hours: Jones 109/MWF 11-noon Joint Lab Session: T 8:30-9:20 (Boswell 220 )
Textbook: 1) Single Variable Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 9th edition by James Stuart.
2) Math 111 Calculus Labs, http://www.wm.edu/as/mathematics/undergrad/wheretostart/math111/index.php
Calculators: All tests and quizzes are completed without a calculator. Students need a calculator for some lab and homework
problems. The TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 or similar type of calculator is recommended.
Tests and Quizzes*: There are three mid-semester tests on these Tuesday Lab Sessions: February 18, March 25 and April 22.
Make-up tests are given only in extreme circumstances such as documented serious illness or personal circumstance. Such
documentation should be obtained prior to the scheduled test date. A weekly quiz covering 2 or 3 sections is administered during
most lab sessions. There are no make-up quizzes, even for legitimate absences such as illness, family emergency, or a college
sponsored event. Your lowest two quiz scores are dropped, however, before your final grade is calculated.
*To prepare, work through homework problems and example problems from class lectures; recreate the steps shown in class. Know
how to use definitions and proofs to support your work where applicable. Each step of a problem is graded; the final “answer” is only
one part of the complete solution. Each step must be neat, logical and accurate to receive full credit.
Final Exam: All sections of Math 111 take a common final exam on Wednesday, May 7 , 7pm-10pm. Your final exam score may
replace your lowest attempted test score if it is higher. A practice final exam is located on the Math 111 website.
Homework: Homework problems are not graded, however, understanding and completing all problems is essential for success in the
course. A student solution manual is recommended and may be purchased through the W&M Bookstore.
Labs: The 4th credit hour of this course is a lab session. You are required to attend all your lab sessions and bring a printed blank
copy of the week’s lab lesson and lab exercises (do not complete this before the lab session). The lab documents (lesson and
exercises) are located on the Math 111 website; use the attached schedule to determine which lab is needed each week. Your
Teaching Assistant (TA) will give you helpful instruction for each lab and then administer the weekly quiz. Most completed lab
exercises are submitted the following week (see schedule) and graded by the Teaching Assistant (TA). The lab scores count toward
your overall grade for the course.
Attendance and Expectations: Regular attendance is critical for your success in this course. If you must miss class, you are
expected to get notes and missed material from a classmate. It is important to follow the lecture carefully and remain engaged in
learning. No cell phones, laptops, tablets are allowed unless used for note taking.
Grading: Your final grade is calculated as follows: Mid-semester Tests 15% each
Quiz Average 15%
Lab Average 15%
Final Exam: 25%
Students are responsible for monitoring their scores on Blackboard and reporting discrepancies immediately after posting.
The final letter grade is assigned using the scale: A 93-100, A- 90-92, B+ 87-89, B 83-86, B- 80-82,
C+ 77-79, C 73-76, C- 70-72, D+ 67-69, D 63-66, D- 60-62, F < 60
Tutoring: (free) available Sunday through Thursday evenings from 5-8 pm, Jones 112.
Honor Code: Uphold William and Mary’s honor code as it is written; infractions are submitted to the Honor Council.
Student Accessibility Services: William & Mary accommodates students with disabilities in accordance with federal laws and
university policy. Any student who feels they may need an accommodation based on the impact of a learning, psychiatric, physical,
or chronic health diagnosis should contact Student Accessibility Services staff at 757-221-2512 or at [email protected] to determine if
accommodations are warranted and to obtain an official letter of accommodation.
