Verb Forms: -ing, to-infinitive, someone + -ing

1. Verb + -ing (Gerund)


Some verbs are followed by the -ing form (gerund). Common verbs in this category include:
• enjoy, finish, avoid, suggest, keep, mind, consider
Examples:
• "I enjoy playing football."
• "They finished cleaning the room."
• "She suggested going to the park."

2. Verb + to + base form (Infinitive)


Some verbs are followed by the "to" infinitive. Common verbs in this category include:
• decide, want, hope, plan, promise, agree, learn, manage
Examples:
• "He decided to leave early."
• "They hope to visit us soon."
• "She promised to help with the homework."

3. Verb + someone + base form or -ing


Some verbs can be followed by "someone" and then the action. There are two possibilities:

1. Verb + someone + base form: ask, tell, order, want, advise


Example: "They told him to stay."

2. Verb + someone + -ing: hear, see, notice, watch, catch


Example: "I saw her running down the street."

4. Verbs That Can Take Both Forms (Change in Meaning)


• Stop:
• "He stopped smoking." (He quit smoking.)
• "He stopped to smoke." (He paused an activity to smoke.)
• Try:
• "Try to finish your homework." (Make an effort to complete it.)
• "Try drinking more water." (Experiment with drinking more water.)
