Introduction
Background Information
Consumption of dietary fiber in most cases reduces the risk and prevents obesity. The

consumption of too many fatty foods and too little movement causes obesity. Obesity takes a

hefty tool on body and mind. Obesity diminishes almost every aspect of health, reproductive

and respiratory function and memory and mood. Obesity is caused when extra calories are

stored in the body as fat. Obesity can be very dangerous, which increases mortality rate, high

blood pressure, the risk of several debilitating and deadly diseases, including diabetes and some

cancers. Obesity affects children as well as adults. Many factors can contribute to excess weight

gain including eating patterns, physical activity levels, and sleep routines. People gain weight

when they eat more calories than burn though activity.

According to studies dietary fiber enhances satiety and reduces food intake in future meals.

Dietary fiber may improve some of the metabolic aberrations seen in obesity. If enough dietary

fiber is consumed obesity may be prevented. The importance of gut fermentation and changes

in the gut microbiota and metabolites are linked to decrease risk for obesity-related disorders.

However, Leonora Secondary School, which is in a rural community on the East Bank of

Essequibo whereas the researcher has been attending for the past four (4) years and was

recognized that there is an obesity issue among the students attending that school. It was

observed that most students are consuming more junk food in their diet, this could lead to bad

health issues. This research commenced to gain knowledge from the students’ stand points

about how they maintain their diet in the school. The researcher intends to share her perspective

on minimizing the occurrence of students being obese at Leonora Secondary School.

4
Statement of Problem
 Dietary fiber reduces the risk of and prevents obesity.

5
Objectives
 To investigate if the intake of dietary fiber reduces the risk of obesity.
 To identify ways that are best for preventing obesity.

 To determine if BMI is a useful measure of keeping track of health.

6
Methodology
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary fiber and obesity

at Leonora Secondary School. A questionnaire was employed since it offered a quick and

simple way to gather data and allowed for the discussion of a wide range of topics. A

questionnaire is a type of research tool made up of a list of questions used to collect data from

participants for a survey or statistical analysis. We can get useful information from using a

questionnaire to finish this school-based assessment. One drawback of this is that not everyone

will want to complete the questionnaire. A total of fifteen surveys were given to Leonora

Secondary School students. Pupils in grades nine, ten, and eleven were selected at random.

During lunch, the questionnaire was collected and distributed. The pupils have enough time to

finish the questionnaire because of this. We decided to implement this in the classroom due to

the ease with which we can get the necessary data and the prevalence of obese children we

have observed. The questionnaire was distributed without any issues.

Some advantages of using the questionnaire method are that:

- It can be done at the accessibility of the people required to have it completed.

- It is classified as persons not obligated to write their names (ID).

- It requires little amount of time to be completed.

Some disadvantages of using the questionnaire method are:

- There are no personal interactions.

- Not asking a question face to face can lead to different interpretations.

keeping track of your health?

Shown on a chart(column) 100% (15 respondents) chose “YES”. While 0% (0 respondents)

choose “NO”.

From information presented on a Bar Graph when questioned Do you think a high fiber

diet can reduce and prevent obesity?

The results showed that 66.6% with (10 respondents) chose “YES”, while 33.3% (5

respondents) choose “NO”.

Finally, on a pie chart when asked What ways do you think are the best for reducing

and/or preventing obesity?

The survey revealed that 66.6% (10 respondents) chose the option “have a high fiber diet (eat

more vegetables)” another 80% (12 respondents) chose the option “exercise regularly”,

13.3% (2 respondents) chose the option “consume faster food”. An addition of 6.6% (1

respondent) chose “consume more carbohydrates”, 46.6% (7 respondents) chose stress less

and 46.6% (7 respondents) chose the final option consume more water and less carbonated

beverages which pertaining to results is the best way to reduce obesity.

14
Statement of finding

This survey has revealed a variety of opinions on Dietary fiber and Obesity.

These include:

 BMI is a useful measure taken to keep track of your health. Which was indicated by

60% of the students.

 Fiber diet is most likely used to prevent obesity. This was indicated by 66.6% of the

students.

 One of the best ways for reducing or preventing obesity is to consume more water and

less carbonated beverages. This was indicated by 46.6% of the students at Leonora

Secondary School.

15
Conclusion
It can be concluded that consuming fatty foods and drinking fizzy drinks may be the main

causes of the high number of obesity cases at Leonora Secondary School. Studies have shown

that people may experience fewer health problems if they stop eating fatty foods and

carbonated drinks.

16
Recommendations
Following data collection, it is advised that Leonora Secondary School students consume
more high-fiber foods and drink more water in addition to consuming less carbonated
beverages. Second, the researcher suggests that in order to prevent obesity, students should
also be aware of the practical benefits of monitoring their health.

17
Reflection
Through this investigation, the researcher discovered that students believe BMI to be a

beneficial tool for monitoring their health. The researcher also discovered that students should

drink more water and less fizzy drinks in addition to exercising on a daily basis.

One thing I have learnt from this is that if I start meal planning more effectively in the future,

I'll be able to maintain a balanced diet and begin regular exercise.

This project could have been better, in my opinion, if the survey had been created with more

questions and distributed to other neighborhoods for completion and return collection.

One social effect of obesity is that it can lead to depression and discrimination.

One economic impact is that water is way cheaper than carbonated beverages.
