“The Bronx Bombers” lived up to that moniker in huge fashion by striking 306 home runs, second in the A. L. to the record-breaking Twins and the most in
franchise history. Fourteen Yankees hit at least eleven homers with Gleyber Torres’ 38 leading the way and Gary Sanchez’s 34 right behind. DJ LeMahieu
finished second in the league in batting average and topped the ballclub with 102 RBI, 197 base hits, and 109 runs scored. Torres followed with 90 runs
batted in. Their .267 team batting average was fourth best in the A. L. The Yanks also scored the most runs (943)…Domingo German ended the year 18-4 in
wins/losses. His 153 K’s were second on the pitching staff to James Paxton’s 186. Paxton won 15 ballgames. CC Sabathia became the fourteenth pitcher in
major league history to record at least 250 career victories and 3,000 strikeouts June 19 th. The Yankees 50 saves were the most in the league; their 4.31 ERA
placed them sixth…The AL East champions easily knocked off the Twins in the ALDS, 3-0, and then took the Houston Astros--with the best record in
baseball--to a sixth game of the ALCS before having their season suddenly end on a walk-off two-run home run in the last of the ninth at Houston with the
scored tied 4-4…These Yankees were a very remarkable team. During the season, a large platoon of key players was often injured/lost for the year at the
same time, but the ball club fought on, nearly playing for their 28 th world championship.
