Research Question:
How does the epic genre, particularly as exemplified by The Ramayana,
shape the portrayal of heroism, duty, and divine intervention in Indian culture?

Case Study Selection:


The Ramayana is an ideal case study for exploring the epic genre. As one
of India's most revered literary works, it encapsulates the core values and
ideals of Hindu culture. By examining its narrative structure, characterization,
and thematic concerns, we can gain insights into the power of epic poetry to
shape cultural identity and belief systems.

II. Genre Definitions and Theoretical Framework

Genre Definitions:
An Epic Poetry that has a long narrative poem that celebrates the deeds of a
legendary hero, often involving supernatural or mythological elements. Epics
typically explore grand themes, such as good versus evil, love and loss, and
the nature of destiny.

Comparative Framework:
A comparative literary approach will be employed to analyze The
Ramayana within the broader context of epic poetry. This approach will focus on
identifying both the unique features of the text and its shared characteristics with
other epic works.

Summary:
The Ramayana recounts the life of Rama, an avatar of the Hindu god
Vishnu. The epic explores themes of dharma (righteousness), love, and the
divine, as Rama, along with his devoted wife Sita and loyal brother Lakshmana,
battles the demon king Ravana to rescue Sita from captivity.

Genre Conventions:

Rama embodies the ideal hero, possessing qualities such as courage,


strength, and moral integrity (Heroic Figure). This story incorporates
supernatural elements, such as divine weapons and celestial beings,
highlighting the role of the divine in human affairs (Divine Intervention). The
epic scope of the narrative encompasses vast geographical settings and a
multitude of characters, both human and divine (Epic Scale).

kidnapped by Ravan, she stayed being loyal and faithful to Rama. This epic
story reinforces the Hindu belief in a cosmic order, where divine forces
ultimately prevail over evil.

The Ramayana shares many characteristics with other epic poems, such
as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, it also possesses unique features that reflect
the specific cultural and religious context of ancient India. The emphasis on
