distance traveled, from 4,740 miles in 1985 to 6,475 miles in 2000. This represents an increase
of 1,735 miles, indicating a shift towards more travel overall. Focusing on specific modes, the
most significant rise can be seen in the car category, which increased from 3,199 miles to 4,806
miles, demonstrating a growing reliance on cars for transportation. In contrast, the distance
traveled by walking dropped from 255 miles to 237 miles, and cycling saw a decline from 51
miles to just 41 miles. Public transport also experienced mixed results such as local bus travel
decreased from 429 miles to 274 miles, while train travel rose from 289 miles to 366 miles.
Interestingly, long-distance bus travel saw a drop from 54 miles to 124 miles, while taxis only
saw a minor increase from 13 miles to 42 miles. The “Other” category grew from 450 miles to
585 miles.
