CHM1046L Exp 1 Part IV Data Sheet
Note:
In A-2, A-3 and C-3 I selected both soluble and precipitates, because some of the sample
dissolves and some in present as precipitates.
Write a rationale explaining how you determined which cations are absent and which are present.
Rational must explain stepwise how the observations prove the presence.
In order to check the presence of iron, chromium and manganese in the sample, following
steps will be followed.
20 drops of mixture or unknown sample will be taken in a test tube.
10 drops of NaOH will be added and mix well.
Test tube will be placed in a water bath and centrifuged for 1 minute.
Supernatant will be taken in a separate test tube.
If there will be chromium in the sample it will be present in the supernatant, in order to
confirm its presence 2 drops of hydrogen peroxide and barium chloride will be
added into it. The appearance of yellow precipitates will confirm the presence of
chromium.
The precipitates initially obtained after addition of NaOH will be tested further to
check the presence of iron and manganese in the sample. First of all precipitates will be
dissolved by adding nitric acid and then obtained solution will be divided into two
parts.
In first half we will add sodium bismuthate and the appearance of purple color will
confirm the presence of manganese in the sample.
In the second half solution we will add potassium thiocyanate and the appearance of
blood red color will confirm the presence of iron in the sample.
