STEM education is a discipline of study that focuses on integrating skills and knowledge specific

to science, technology, engineering and mathematics through applying higher order thinking
strategies and systematic and complex approaches to not just improve one self-efficacy but also
to attain the required aptitude and literacy to successfully contribute on improving the social,
economic, and environmental condition in the society.
According to Hacioglu and Gulhan (2021), STEM education is essential in promoting critical
thinking skills and STEM perception on middle school students that is important in our current
21st century because STEM education is one of the most demanding educational attainment and
degree keep pace in this rapid developing society. Through identifying the effect of the
engineering design-based STEM education on the middle school student’s critical thinking skills
and STEM perception, the result shown that STEM education enhanced the critical thinking skills
of the students especially in regard to verification of the validity of an information and the state
of being open minded. Additionally, STEM education affects positively on the students’ STEM
perceptions particularly on their perceptions towards the STEM disciplines’ relation with real
life setting that results on the improvements of students' STEM career awareness and increase
their tendency of choosing professions under STEM fields for the future.

This research study illustrates the significance if STEM education in developing critical thinking skills and
on how student view STEM education which helps them student to consider choosing profession under
STEM field. However, no matter how significance the STEM education in the society, many students still
encountered various difficulties regarding with its complex concepts and approaches. In the study of
Escalona and Fiscal (2020) regarding with the STEM education challenges in the Philippines, they stated
that there are challenges that the students are experiencing while studying STEM education such as thre

ed difficulties searching for related literature, conceptualizing topics or titles for research, selecting and
identifying respondents, searching for theoretical framework, and looking for appropriate materials,
equipment, and tools for experimental research were the major difficulties.

difficulties were cooperation, procrastination, communication, time management, and financial support.
For the third category, the difficulties encountered were teachers’ schedule, high expectations,
pressures on deadlines, teachers’ attitudes and personality, priorities and personal affairs. Lastly, f

difficulties were poor time management, financial support, procrastination, research skills, knowledge
