Class Tutorial Sheet 1

The document consists of various physics problems related to motion, including the analysis of a spring-mounted slider, a rotating arm with a sliding collar, a motorist's deceleration on a curved highway, relative motion between two automobiles, the trajectory of a weather balloon, the movement of pins in a yoke, the dynamics of a ball on a cardioid path, and the interaction between a freighter and a torpedo. Each problem requires the application of kinematic equations and principles of dynamics to determine quantities such as displacement, velocity, acceleration, and relative motion. The problems are designed to enhance understanding of motion in different contexts and scenarios.

Class Tutorial 1

1. The spring-mounted slider moves in the horizontal guide with negligible friction and has a
velocity 𝑣0 in the 𝑠-direction as it crosses the mid-position where 𝑠 = 0 and 𝑡 = 0. The two
springs together exert a retarding force to the motion of the slider, which gives it an acceleration
proportional to the displacement but oppositely directed and equal to 𝑎 = −𝑘 2 𝑠, where 𝑘 is
constant. Determine the expressions for the displacement 𝑠 and velocity 𝑣 as functions of the
time 𝑡.

2. The rotation of the 0.9-m arm 𝑂𝐴 about 𝑂 is defined by the relation 𝜃 = 0.15𝑡 2, where 𝜃 is
expressed in radians and t is in seconds. Collar 𝐵 slides along the arm in such a way that its
distance from 𝑂 is 0.9 − 0.12𝑡 2 , where 𝑟 is expressed in meters and 𝑡 in seconds. After the arm
𝑂𝐴 has rotated through 30°, determine (a) the total velocity of the collar, (b) the total
acceleration of the collar, (c) the relative acceleration of the collar with respect to the arm.

3. A motorist is traveling on a curved section of highway of radius 2500 ft at the speed of 60 mi/h.
The motorist suddenly applies the brakes, causing the automobile to slow down at a constant
rate. Knowing that after 8 s the speed has been reduced to 45 mi/h, determine the acceleration
of the automobile immediately after the brakes have been applied (1 mi = 5280 ft).
4. Automobile 𝐴 is traveling east at the constant speed of 36 km/h. As automobile 𝐴 crosses the
intersection shown, automobile 𝐵 starts from rest 35 m north of the intersection and moves
south with a constant acceleration of 1.2 m/s 2 . Determine the position, velocity, and
acceleration of 𝐵 relative to 𝐴, 5 s after 𝐴 crosses the intersection.

5. At any instant the horizontal position of the weather balloon is defined by 𝑥 = 8𝑡 ft, where 𝑡 is
in seconds. If the equation of the path is 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 ⁄10, determine the magnitude and direction of
the velocity and the acceleration when 𝑡 = 2 s.

6. Pins 𝐴 and 𝐵 must always remain in the vertical slot of yoke 𝐶, which moves to the right at a
constant speed of 6 ft/s. Furthermore, the pins cannot leave the elliptic slot. What is the speed
at which the pins approach each other when the yoke slot is at 𝑥 = 5 ft? What is the rate of
change of speed towards each other when the yoke slot is at 𝑥 = 5 ft?
7. Due to the rotation of the forked rod, the ball travels around the slotted path, a portion of which
is in the shape of a cardioid, 𝑟 = 0.5(1 − cos 𝜃) ft, where 𝜃 is in radians. If the ball's velocity
is 𝑣 = 4 ft/s and its acceleration is 𝑎 = 30 ft/s 2 at the instant 𝜃 = 180°, determine the angular
velocity 𝜃̇ and angular acceleration 𝜃̈ of the fork.

8. A freighter is moving at a steady speed 𝑉1 of 15 km/h relative to the water. The freighter is 200
m long at the waterline with point A at mid-ship. A stalking submerged submarine fires a
torpedo when the submarine and the freighter are at the positions shown in the figure. The
torpedo maintains a steady speed 𝑉2 of 40 km/h relative to water. Will the torpedo hit the
freighter?
