Environment

S SPARK Your Interest

This learning Episode provides an opportunity to examine how classrooms are structured or designed to
allow everyone's maximum participation for effective learning. You should be able to examine how classroom
management practices affect learning. This Episode enhances the application of the theories learned in the following
professional subject such as Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching and The Child and Adolescent Learners and
Learning Principles.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcome

At the end of this Episode, I must be able to:

> plan on how to manage time, space, and resources; and

> provide a learning environment appropriate to the learners and conducive to learning.

REVISIT the Learning Essentials

The classroom climate that is conducive for learning is one that is non-threatening yet business-like. It is a
classroom where, when creating audio-visual presentations, the following are observed:

● Specific classroom rules and procedures are clear.

● Classroom rules and procedures are discussed within the first few days of the school.

● Students are involved in the design of rules and procedures.

● Techniques to acknowledge and reinforce acceptable behavior are employed.

● Clear limits for unacceptable behavior are established and negative consequences for such as
communicated
● Classroom processes are democratic.

Grade/Year Level: _____________ Subject Area: ____________________ Date: ____________

OBSERVE

Observe and use the observation sheet provided for you to document your observations.

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.

The learners have different personalities; some are approachable and respectful; some are noisy and keeps going in
and out of the room. Some learners pay attention whenever the teacher is discussing in front, while some students
do not. Every individual in the room has its own pace in terms of learning; some are slow learners, but with
eagerness to learn; and some are fast learners. The class is consist of 41 learners, with the age ranging from 13-18
years old.

2. How many boys are there? How many girls?

The class is consist of 34 students. There are 21 boys and 20 girls.

3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?

Focusing on their behavior, the learners has still a lot to learn in terms of behaving in the class. Some students are
disciplined, while some doesn’t possessed control in their behaviors. Respect isn’t something you give easily but it is
rude to disrespect someone who didn’t do anything wrong. Some learners do not pay attention whenever the teacher
is talking. While the teacher is talking in front, students are also talking at the back and minding their own business as
if there is no teacher at all.
4. Can the learners already work independently?

Learners still cannot work independently. They still need assistance from the teacher. The teacher would teach them
and give examples and they will try it on their own. Some still cannot get the correct answer, and some asks for
another example. The teacher would teach them step by step, but most of the students can’t still get it.

5. Describe their span of attention.

As far as we know, students can only pay attention for only 15 minutes, but as we observe, students have shorter
span of attention. The learners would listen for about 10 – 15 minutes and later after that, students will start talking
and doing unrelated things to the subject. It’s a challenge for the teachers to do something engaging and interacting
for the students to stay focus in the class.

ANALYZE

Analyze and answer these questions on observed classroom management practices. It is also good to ask
the teacher for additional information, so you can validate your observation. Write your notes below; and then
organize your data in the Table that follows.

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books, students' belongings,
supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will it make a difference if these areas for specific purposes are not present?

There are areas in the room where the teacher and the students store their things such as teaching aids, books,
projects, students belonging, supplies, etc. These areas actually help the room become organized and clean. These
areas have its own purposes, like for storing and organizing things.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these rules reinforce positive behavior?

There are no rules posted in the room, only the classroom cleaners. We think the students are noisy and liberal
because they don’t have any rules to follow. As for the classroom cleaners, it reinforced positive behavior because
they would know whose group it is to clean the classroom. The students would act according to the rules and their
time schedule.

3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If the Resource Teacher is available, ask him/her to
describe the process. What's the effect of students' participation in rule-making on student's behavior?

The students participate in making the classroom rule. As the students clean the room before and after the class, it
will foster a variety of valuable skills and qualities, such as responsibility, organization and cooperation. They will
learn to be accountable for their actions towards their surroundings. Moreover, cleaning task require planning and
organization which help them to manage their time and their study habits. Lastly, working together to clean promotes
teamwork and cooperation which will help them to become more aware of their classmates.
4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (prayer, attendance, assignment of monitors, warm-up
activities, etc.) How are they done?

In a daily routine, the resource teacher always starts with the greetings, followed by the prayer, classroom
management, checking of attendance and assignment, and discussions. If the resource teacher is running out of
time, she then gives assignments to the students for a self-study session.

5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? Does this help in managing the class?

There is actually seating arrangement in the room. The basis of these arrangement is according on the teachers’
preferences. Some students are near sighted so they are placed in front. Boys and girls are arranged in an alternate
position to lessen the noise they would create if the students sit beside their close friends.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

The students are so noisy that their voice would be heard from 2-3 rooms aways. In this matter, the teacher would let
them speak for a minute and then scold them. In some ways, the teacher would give extra points to those students
who can answer her questions so that the students will listen to her and the noise will be lessen.

7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off-task, what does the Resource Teacher do? Describe the behavior
strategies used.

If a learner is not following instructions, it only means that the learner is not listening. The resource teacher would
repeat the instructions and making it clear to them in a gentle way so that the learners can follow. If a resource
teacher gets angry or scold the learners over that matter, the learners would feel shame and lose interest and might
not cooperate.

8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (Behavior strategies)

The teacher would offer positive reinforcement or specific praise to acknowledge the positive behavior of the student.
In addition. she gives rewards to the students to encourage and motivate them to continue showing positive behavior.

REFLECT

Reflection as a future teacher.

1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?

Enforcing positive discipline among students can create a positive learning environment. In such way, the students
will feel respect and safety among themselves. Moreover, it would promote growth and development in their
behavior. Enforcing positive discipline among students can create a positive and productive learning environment
where students are motivated to show positive behavior.

ANALYZE

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners' behavior?

Classroom organization and routines play a vital role in shaping the student’s behavior. By establishing a well-
organized classroom and routines, the learners will feel more secure and motivated leading to a positive behavior.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and routines? What
theories and principles should you have in mind?

The teacher should design the classroom organization and routines according to the theory of Behaviorism and
Social Learning Theory. Behaviorism emphasizes the importance of reinforcement and punishment in shaping the
behavior of the students. Social Learning Theory, on the other hand, highlights the importance of modeling and
observational learning. Teachers can set a model desired behaviors and let the students to be influenced. By
incorporating these theories, teachers can create a positive and productive learning environment that promotes
positive behaviors.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating students? Why
were they effective?

The strategy that we think is effective in managing and motivating the behavior of the students is by offering them a
praise and giving them rewards. They are effective because praises and rewards motivates students to do good and
show positive behaviors among their peers and the teachers.

REFLECT

Reflect on the following and write your insights.

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year level do you see yourself? What
routines and procedures would you consider for this level Why?

In the future, I think the grade level that I will handle is the grade 9. The routines and procedures that I will consider
will be, first, the morning routines, such as entering the classroom quietly, unpacking the belongings, starting a
morning activity like cleaning. Second, attendance and assignments, followed by discussions and activities. Students
are being taught by these routines and procedures since elementary so might as well utilize these routines and
procedures for students because it reinforced positive behaviors and foster good discipline among students.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these rules?

These are the rules that we will likely to implement in the future.

1. Always wear your uniform and ID all the time.

2. Minimize your voice during class hours.
3. Listen when someone is discussing in front.
4. Keep the classroom neat and clean.

These are the basic rules that students must be able to follow. These will help them become more aware of their
surrounding and it can create positive and productive learning environment.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

Yes. Learners have their rights to suggest classroom rules because it will benefit them. However, we will only
approve these rules if everyone in the group or the majority has come to an agreement of these rules suggested.

Direction: Read the items given below and encircle the correct answer.

1. Focusing on natural consequences of students' behavior develops more self-regulation in the students. Which of
the following teacher statements demonstrates focusing on natural consequences?

B. "If it takes you longer to finish the seatwork because time is wasted with chatting, then we won't
have time to go to the playground anymore."

C. "Those who are well-behaved in class will be given plus 5 points in the quiz."

D. If you get a grade of 95 or higher in the first two assignments, you will be exempted from the 3rd
assignment.

2. Learners are more likely to internalize and follow classroom rules when __________________

A. the teacher clearly explains the rules she prepared
