FMS Interview
Date 23/04/21
Slot 4 20 - 6 20 pm
Btech Chemical Engineering NIT Bhopal Fresher
10cgpa/95%/99.29 Percentile
Two Panelists one male (M) one female (F)

M- what should I call you? Sidra or Nasir?

Me- cleared out that my name is Sidra and my father's is Nasir.

M- okay, Sidra tell me about your background

Me- fresher Btech in Chemical engineering from NIT Bhopal (interrupted here)

M- okay, so you are a chemical engineer. Sidra do you follow Indian politics?
Me- Yes sir, somewhat.

M- okay so if we say your extempore topic is "how Indian politics is more of chemistry than mere
mathematics" will you be comfortable?
Me- Yes sir
(Gave me 15 seconds to think)
Me- told about how Indian politics are not just simple mathematics equations of addition and
subtraction. But more of complex structures like Chemistry. Told about different types of bondind
and forces in chemistry and their degree.. ionic bond, covalent bond, Van der wall forces..and
how similarly different parties of India have varying degree of forced between them. (Despite
many national parties, only two are leading). Then told about forces which only work in specified
region and do not work in a much larger range.. similarly there are some parties that are doing
really well in a particular region AAP in Delhi, and how TMC has lead in Bengal but these are
not of much importance at the national scale.. also talked about electrophile and nucleophile
which attracts opposite electron deficient or surplus atoms towards them.. and how parties
attract voters using their setbacks (like people belonging to backward castes). Was interrupted
here.

M- do politicians in India play fair on Ethical ground?

Me- not exactly, many use cast and religion as their tool to draw voters towards them and
explained how "vote banks" work. And how in India it's not "cast your vote" but "vote your cast".

M- okay. So what is a chemical engineer doing at a B school?

Me- told how engineering was my choice but chemical wasn't. And how I'm inclined to
management. (Interrupted)

M- this seems more of a tutored answer. Tell us how you got interested in management.
Me- I was involved in extra curricular (interrupted here and said no activites. Your motivation)
I then talked about how women entrepreneurs fascinates me. Quoted Falguni Nayar (Nykaa's
CEO) talked about manager's role.

M- still not convinced. If I'm interested in something I'll do read about it right? So what did you
read about management?
Me- I've an inclination for marketing. And in 2020 I did an online course offered by Google on
"digital marketing".

M- tell me 4 terms that you have learnt from that course.

Me- Search engine optimization, search engine marketing, audience segmentation, 4P's of
marketing.

M- okay fair enough. Where are you connecting from?

Me- Bhopal

M- ohh soorma Bhopali? (Everybody laughed)

M- Sidra that's it by our end.

It lasted for about 10 minutes.

F just sat and gazed the screen for the entire time.
Interview went well, though I'm not sure about the SOP part, because he was just not getting
convinced.

Guitar player sooo

M: what do you think about jazz?

Small discussion on jazz, jazz singing and stuff. Asked me about psychedelic music, and asked
why singers do weird stuff on stage

M: guitar player and mechanical engineering, don't seem to go together. Mechanical is dull,
music is creative. Monologue mein chale gaye sir. Fir pucha if there are any examples of
creativity in mechanical. Said sir there's loads of scope for creativity in mech, industrial design is
a subset. One example is the moto razr, which is iconic now.

M: is it a mechanical device? What are the moving parts?

Said its an electro-mechanical device, several mechanical moving parts eg the flip mechanism
itself. Was a game changer at that time. xD

M: what is your vision of India? Positive or negative

Said there's potential, but personally short-term outlook is veering towards negative-
(Cuts in) M: What do you like the most about india?

will get them out of it

Said I read India moving by chinmay tumbe

M: arre yaar what kinda books are these, read something that we're familiar with no, like
gurcharan das

M: What other calls do you have?

Said a,b,l,fms

M: so you don't need fms

Me: NO SIR I ABSOLUTELY DO, judging by how the other interviews went, I really need it

M: So the other interviews didn't go well?

Said I wasn't happy with the interviews, but it's tough to know what the interviewers make of the
answers we give I suppose.

M: how do you think this interview is going?

Said it's tough to know what you make of the answers I'm giving

Q : where am I located
A: from Bangalore, but in Chennai

Q: extempore topic is lotus

A: full story on how my life story is like a lotus, I grow from the dirt, rise up through muddy
waters and blossom(included Starbucks story of me working during college to support myself)

Q: education background
A: answered

Q: they stopped me in the middle and asked that I'd mentioned that FMS is the most democratic
b school, can you explain why and where you got this info from?
A: I didn't get this info from anywhere, it's a conclusion I came to on my own, because a lot of
other b schools focus a lot on school acads which you can only focus on if you come from a
privileged background, if you have to focus on your family finances, academics becomes
secondary which makes some of the other schools inaccessible to a certain section of society,
this is why I believe FMS is the most democratic b school.

Q: you've mentioned about Hunger, so how would you solve world hungry especially in sub
Saharan Africa
A: 1) try to grow things that can actually grow in Africa, don't use a one size fits all approach
2) don't drastically change the normal diet of the people, this can lead to a lot of health issues
3) we can easily easily do it by curbing food wastage, a third of all food in the world goes to the
dust bin, if you take the Americas it's 40%

Q: okay so you think we will have food security looking at climate change
A: not if we stay the way we are, we'll need to make a few changes

Q: what are these changes

A: sustainable agriculture, have example of Californian almonds and how they make no sense
2) moving to a more plant based diet can be very helpful

Q: okay Kamal, I wish you the very best for your future endeavours, stay safe :)
A: I hope you have a great day!

Q: you too

FMS interview experience,

Board 7
Slot: 11:30 AM
[BTech. in CSE, Fresher, 99.68]

Two panelists, both female professors in their 40's or 50's. We'll call them P1 and P2.

Me, smiling: Good morning, teachers. [realized a second too late that the correct greeting would
have been 'good afternoon professors' and now I sounded like a school kid]

P1, P2: *indulgent smiles and nods*

P2: Good /afternoon/, Vaswati.
Me: Ah yes, I'm sorry Ma'am.
P2, pleasantly: It's alright :)

P1: So Vaswati, TMAY.

Me: [launches into prepared answer]

P2, smiling: So your extempore topic is, "5 important decisions by Vaswati, the Head Girl." You'll
have 60 seconds to speak, and 10 seconds to think beforehand.

Me: [Gets to speak about only 3 decisions before time runs out.]
Me: Oh, I'm sorry :]
P1: Don't worry, that's not a problem.

P1: So Vaswati, you're a BTech. student, you're majoring in CSE, so where does an MBA figure
in?
Me: [prepared answer, + talks about how it's my dream to be an investment banker in a VC or
PE firm, how it ties into my background of leading the Entrepreneurship Cell in college]
P1: So do you believe an MBA is required to be a good manager?
Me: talks about how it isn't absolutely /required/, how everyone learns in different ways, how
some learn through experience, but how I personally am someone who benefits from a
structured framework of learning, the kind that a degree can provide.
P1, P2 smile.

P1: So Vaswati, you want to be an investment banker. Can you tell me some of the key aspects
of finance?
Me: Talks about raising capital through equity and debt, generating new revenue streams for a
company while making sure you can achieve scale with profit, pursuing M&A.
P1, P2 smile.
P2: Can you tell me some prospective revenue streams for FMS?
Me, mildly panicking on the inside but smiling on the outside: [talks about how students can run
a mutual fund for profit, with oversight from professors, knowing fully well FMS has some sort of
MF already though probably not for profit]
P2, smiling: So do you think we need some registration with a regulator to run this sort of MF?
Me: Yes, I think so, since you'll be making financial gain by investing other people's money in
potentially volatile securities markets... If I were a reglator, I would probably want to know.
P2: Yes, yes, I agree.

P1: Tell me Vaswati, there's all these multi-billion dollar corporations that are not generating any
profit at all. How are they not going bankrupt? Why do people invest in them?
Me: Talks about liquidity and cash flow, how as long as there's a prospective positive free cash
flow in 10, 20 years, that's often enough for many investors.
P1: How can they be sure the cash flow will be positive in so many years?
Me: Talks about valuation of companies
P1: How is valuation computed?
Me: Talks about DCF in detail, mentions formula for WACC which as far as I know is often used
as the discount rate.
P1, P2 smile, seem satisfied.

P2: Who is one business leader that you admire?

Me: fangirls about Leena Nair, what sets her apart, her journey and achievements, etc.
P2: Do you know which business school she's an alumnus of?
Me: XLRI Jamshedpur.

P2, smiling: Thank you Vaswati, it was really nice talking to you.
Me: Thank you Ma'am, it was a great experience interviewing at FMS.
P1: Take care and enjoy your stay in Delhi!
