DEFENSE MECHANISMS 1. Repression


Unconscious & involuntary forgetting of painful ideas, events & conflicts. Autonomic, submerging. Conscious & voluntary forgetting. Intentional exclusion of forbidden ideas & thoughts. Putting anger into something productive. Diversion of unacceptable feelings, ideas in socially acceptable areas. Plastic, doing the opposite of the intention. Assuming the attitude/behavior that one regrets. Attempting to justify/modify unacceptable needs. Using illogical reasoning Because . Attributing one s own unacceptable feelings to others. Blaming others. Actual or symbolic attempt to erase previous experiences that causes guilt. To repair feelings. Attempting to make up or affect deficiencies. Developing other personal qualities to hide weaknesses. Attempting to pattern or resemble the personality of an admired person (idolizes). Overuse of intellectual concepts to avoid effective expression of feelings. Grieving with explanations.

Blocking out or disowning of painful thought/feelings. Related to rationalization.

- World is ending or person is dying.

Transfer into another situation of an emotion to an appropriate person or object. Using symbols as an external object Dividing people into good or bad categories. Sudden reversal of feelings. Internalization Values & attitudes of others as if they were your own.

- Being threatened or spied on paranoid suspicious people.
