1. No Poverty
End poverty in all its forms everywhere by tackling factors such as income inequality, social exclusion,
and lack of access to basic services. Despite efforts to alleviate poverty, Zamboanga City still faces
challenges in providing sustainable livelihoods to all its residents, particularly those in marginalized
communities.
2. Zero Hunger
Achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture to eliminate hunger and
ensure food access for all. Zamboanga City’s initiatives, such as community gardens and food assistance
programs, have made progress in reducing hunger, but more efforts are needed to ensure food security
for all residents, especially vulnerable groups.
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, focusing on areas such as maternal and
child health, infectious diseases, and mental health. Zamboanga City’s access to healthcare services has
improved, yet disparities remain, with rural areas often lacking adequate facilities and resources for
comprehensive healthcare delivery.
4. Quality Education
Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all,
addressing issues like literacy, numeracy, and educational access. Efforts to improve educational
opportunities have resulted in increased enrollment rates, but there is a need for further investment in
infrastructure and teacher training to enhance the quality of education.
5. Gender Equality
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by eliminating gender discrimination,
violence against women, and promoting equal opportunities in various sectors. While strides have been
made in promoting gender equality in Zamboanga City, challenges persist in addressing cultural norms
and practices that limit women’s participation in decision-making and economic activities.
Ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all, improving water quality, efficiency, and
sustainability. Zamboanga City’s access to clean water and sanitation has improved, but disparities exist,
particularly in informal settlements where infrastructure development is lacking.
Promote affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all while expanding the use of
renewable energy sources and enhancing energy efficiency. The city has made progress in promoting
renewable energy sources, but affordability remains a challenge for many residents, particularly in rural
areas.
Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and
decent work for all, addressing issues like job creation, labor rights, and social protection. The city’s
efforts to promote economic growth and job creation have been hindered by factors such as
underemployment and limited access to skills training, particularly among youth.
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, foster innovation, and
enhance access to information and communication technology. While some progress has been made in
infrastructure development and technological advancements, there is still a need for more investment
and innovation to ensure sustainable industrialization worldwide.
Reduce inequalities within and among countries, tackling issues such as income inequality, social
inclusion, and equal rights and opportunities for all. While the city’s efforts have been made to reduce
inequality, disparities persist, particularly in access to education, healthcare, and economic
opportunities among different socio-economic groups.
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, promoting resource efficiency, sustainable
waste management, and environmentally friendly practices. Awareness of sustainable consumption and
production practices is growing, but more efforts are needed to reduce waste generation and promote
recycling and reuse.
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by implementing mitigation and
adaptation measures, promoting climate resilience, and supporting developing countries in their
climate-related efforts. Zamboanga City is vulnerable to climate change impacts such as typhoons and
sea-level rise, necessitating stronger measures to mitigate and adapt to these challenges.
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources, addressing issues such as marine
pollution, overfishing, and ocean acidification. Efforts to protect marine ecosystems and biodiversity are
crucial, given the city’s coastal location, but illegal fishing and pollution remain significant threats to
marine life.
Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems; sustainably manage forests;
combat desertification; halt biodiversity loss; and ensure ecosystem services. Initiatives to conserve
terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity are important for preserving the city’s natural resources and
ensuring the well-being of its residents, but deforestation and habitat degradation continue to be
pressing issues.
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all, and build effective,
accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. Building peace and ensuring access to justice are
ongoing challenges, particularly in conflict-affected areas where the rule of law is often undermined by
insurgency and armed conflict.
Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize global partnerships for sustainable development
by mobilizing resources, enhancing technology transfer, and fostering international cooperation.
Collaboration between government, civil society, and the private sector is essential for achieving
sustainable development in Zamboanga City, but more concerted efforts are needed to strengthen
partnerships and mobilize resources effectively.
