Cal : Mum, tomorrow I have a very important decision to take.

I have to select a team

for the Inter-school Football Tournament. Our Physical Education Teacher will not be
coming to school tomorrow and has asked me to take the decision by myself since I
know the strengths and weaknesses of each player. There are so many talented
players in the school. This is going to be very tough.

Cal’s mum : Yes, Cal, being the Sports Captain of your school, you must think
carefully before you decide. So remain calm and composed, and don't give in to any
kind of pressure. I'm sure you are quite independent and fair and you will do a good
job.

The next day

Narrator : Cal reached school with a list of students who he thought were fit for the
team. But he wanted to be completely sure. So, he called all the players and asked
them to play a match as he looked on.

Cal : This is going to be tougher than I thought.

Narrator : After a while, the game ended. Cal had made some observations about the
way each player had played. Now was the time to announce the names of the team
members.

Narrator2 : The boys sat near him, waiting anxiously for the results. Cal called out
fifteen names out of the twenty-five who were there. Sighs of relief and excitement
could be heard from the ones selected.

Narrator : Suddenly, the ten boys who were not selected stood up and began
protesting. They told Cal that he had not been fair in his selection. Cal, without losing
his cool, gave them the reasons why he had selected the others. But they were in no
mood to listen.

one of the player : We are going to complain to the principal.

* Saying this, they walked angrily towards the principal's office *

Narrator2 : Cal knew something like this was going to happen and he was prepared for
it. He did not worry since he knew he had done his job with utmost fairness. He had
taken his decision in a calm, well-thought manner, and he knew he was right and had
nothing to worry about.

Narrator1 : Soon, he was called to the principal's office. He walked in confidently.

Principal : Cal, these boys here have complained that you have not made the right
decision in selecting the team. I know you must have done a fair job, and I trust you
completely. But we need to explain it to them
Cal : Maam, I have already explained to them the reasons for my selection.
But they are not satisfied with my reasons. I assure you, I have taken my
decision with utmost fairness.

Principal : Okay, students, you may go back to your class. We will discuss
the matter tomorrow when your PE teacher returns.

Narrator 2 : The next day, when the PE teacher came to school, Cal handed
over his list to the PE teacher.

PE teacher : I can proudly say that we have the right person as the Sports
Captain. He couldn't have been fairer than this. He hasn't even chosen his
best friend! I'm absolutely satisfied with his selection and the reasons
mentioned in the list. Had I been in his place, I would have selected the
same students.
