Design Brief - 2024

The project aims to design a modern villa for a multi-generational family of six, focusing on efficient spatial planning, functionality, and aesthetic balance. Key requirements include various living spaces, adherence to building norms, and consideration of human scale and comfort. Students are encouraged to explore form evolution and conduct case studies on architectural styles to inform their designs.

DESIGN BRIEF: VILLA DESIGN PROJECT

Project Aim:

The project involves designing a Modern Villa for a multi-generational family of six, consisting of
grandparents, parents, and two children, aged 6 and 10 years. The design should prioritize efficient
spatial planning, functionality, and the thoughtful evolution of form. The design must align with
building norms and standards while creating a balanced environment that emphasizes both
aesthetics and practicality.

Objective:

1. Design a Modern Villa: Develop a villa that accommodates a family of six with thoughtful spa-
tial arrangements, user comfort, and functionality.

2. Encourage Exploration: Experiment with spatial planning and site adaptation.

3. Focus on Form Evolution: Transform design concepts into a cohesive architectural expression.

Minimum Spatial Requirements:

 Formal Drawing Hall:

 Informal Living Room:

 Dining Area:

 Kitchen:

 Storage Room:

 Washroom:

 Master Bedrooms (as per requirements)

 Kids Bedroom (as per requirements)

 Guest Bedroom

 Toilets

 Garden/Open Spaces

 Parking for 2 cars

 Parking for 3 bikes

 Office/Workspace
Things to be considered:

1. Plot size: 25mts X 20mts = 500sqmts.

2. FAR = 1.25
3. Marginal Open Spaces:
o Ground coverage is 30% = 150sqmts
o Front/Main road: 6 meters
o Rear Side: Minimum of 3 meters
o Maximum height = 12.5 metres
o Total area+ 20% circulation+ 20% wall area

4. Building norms:
o Ensure that the design follows National Building Codes and local development plan
rules.

5. Anthropometry:
o Human scale and comfort must be considered in all spaces, ensuring ergonomic and
functional designs.

Form Evolution Thought Process:

Students are encouraged to explore form evolution throughout the design process. This involves:

 Conceptual Exploration: Begin by exploring abstract forms that relate to the villa’s purpose.
Consider how geometric shapes, organic forms, and spatial interplay can contribute to the
overall design.
 Mass and Void Relationship: Experiment with the relationship between built spaces (mass)
and open spaces (void), ensuring a balanced flow of movement and interaction.
 Hierarchy of Spaces: Think about how spaces transition from public to private areas within
the villa. The design should consider user behaviour, movement patterns, and visual connec-
tions.
 Materiality and Form: The choice of materials should enhance the form, creating a harmo-
nious blend of texture, colour, and structural integrity.

Documentation and Case Studies:

Students are required to form groups of 7-8 members and conduct case studies on different
architectural styles. The objective is to learn from existing examples and apply relevant ideas to
their villa designs. (Examples of architectural styles)
 Group Work
 Documentation Requirements:

o Drawings: Plans, elevations, and sections

o Architectural Style: Its significance and necessity
o Materials: Traditional or contemporary
o Techniques: Unique construction methods or notable differences from contemporaries
o Spatial Arrangement: Room layouts, volumes, and additional spaces like cellars or terraces
o Key Features: Highlight significant elements such as material use, design techniques,
or ornamentation.
