WHAT IS A TRANSLATION PROBLEM?

“A translation problem is an objective problem which every translator has

to solve during a particular translation task “

A translation problem means the difficulty/difficulties we face when we

translate. It makes us stop, think, search, rewrite. It may result from
grammar, words, style and/or sounds. Thus, we have grammatical, lexical,
stylistic and phonological problems.

EXAMPLES OF TRANSLATION
PROBLEMS:

1. Lexical Problems:
• ‫( جوهر‬essence) as if ‫( هذا هو عين الموضوع‬This is the essence of the subject).

• ‫( عين‬eye) as if ‫( عين الصواب‬Eye of the right).

Cultural:

• ‫ من العايدين والفايزين‬،‫عيدكم مبارك‬.

2. Grammatical Problems:
Structure:

Grammatical Problems Complicated SL grammar: “Of the three books you have
recommended to me, 1 have chosen only one.”

.‫ اخترت واحدا فقط‬،‫من بين الكتب الثالثة التي نصحتني بها‬

What challenge does the SL text pose here? “of” at the beginning of the sentence
and postponing the main clause (I have chosen) to a back position, make it
complex. A normal, direct structure reads “I have chosen only one of the three
books you have recommended to me.”

.‫اخترت كتابا واحدا من بين الكتب الثالثة التي نصحتني بها‬

Personal Pronouns:
• ‫ أنتم‬،‫أنتن‬.

• :"‫صبرا فقلت يا اسما عيل صبري‬

ً ‫"طرقت الباب حتى كلمتني فلما كلمتني كلمتني فقالت يا إسماعيل‬

We come to conclusion that the first ‫ كلمتني‬means " you hurt me referring to his head ",
the second ‫ كلمتني‬means that the girl was behind the door answering him.

3. Stylistic Problems:
Formality vs. informality:

Degree of formality Example from English The translation in

Arabic

1. Frozen Formal " Be seated " .‫عليك بالجلوس‬

2. Formal " Have a seat " .‫تفضل بالجلوس‬

3. Informal " Sit down " .‫اجلس لو سمحت‬

4. Colloquial " Feel at home " .‫ ارتاح‬/‫ استرح‬/‫خذ راحتك‬
