Week 2 Discussion Impact Unlocked – Aligning Goals with Audience
Recently, I viewed a video on the TED talk channel called “Inside the Mind of a
Master Procrastinator” by Tim Urban. To a great extent, this presentation was educational in
nature, as the main focus was on outlining the features of procrastination and its effects on
decision-making (Urban, 2016). It was clear it was informative because Urban set out to
simply teach his audience something new with humour rather than trying to convince them to
do something.
The audience was those interested in concepts like productivity and personal
development, and the idea was to present insights into procrastination in a fun fashion.
Identifying the type, purpose, and target group in a speech assists me in this manner.
Slapstick humour and clever visuals appealed to the audience and made Urban effective in
passing on information; therefore, the speech aimed at achieving its goal of informative
speaking successfully.
One problem that personally concerns me is the necessity of everyday care for oral
cavity conditions. If I were to give a persuasive speech about this, my main message would
be: “It is often said that oral health comes first because it opens the door to better health of
argument with evidence, and make appeals to emotions. For example, I may come up with a
life incident whereby an individual lost several teeth and developed allergies and other
diseases because they did not floss their teeth properly. I would also use statistics to explain
how oral health is connected to heart disease and diabetes. Last, I would appeal to the hearts.

I’d remind the audience that clean mouths and gums not only mean all the concepts of
brushing and visiting the dentists but also better health and confidence.
Applying these techniques would mean that rather than persuading my audience to
listen, they would be encouraged to take the action necessary to improve their oral health.
