SPANISH 7/7H SYLLABUS

NAME _____________________________________ TRACK# ____ DATE_________

The two things you will need every day!

BINDER:

- This binder will be specifically for Spanish class.

- Everything we do will be kept in this binder, including anything I grade and give back to you.
- Be ready for occasional binder checks. If you did not bring your binder to class, you CANNOT go
to your locker and get it.

A PENCIL(S) and PAPER

- Pens are not acceptable. Learning something new means making MANY mistakes; therefore you
need to be able to erase. Anything turned in pen will lose 1 point.
- If you do not have a pencil or paper, make sure you find one BEFORE CLASS STARTS.

ONLINE TEXTBOOK

- You do not need access, I will pout everything you need on the shared class google slides.

CLASSROOM POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS

- SPANISH ONLY – This is Spanish class meaning you exclusively speak Spanish. If there is
something you need to say in English, then you probably shouldn’t be saying it. Look at the
expressions on the wall and use those to communicate with me. I will speak English when giving
directions.

- Supplies: Pencils, online textbook, binder with cover sheet (your name, my name, class subject,
track 3), Pack of dividers

- Notes: You are expected to take notes. Not taking notes means you are doing nothing and
therefore forfeiting your participation points.

- Respect: Although we all look different on the outside, we are all very much the same on the
inside. Every single person deserves to be treated EQUALLY and with RESPECT! If you say
anything rude, nasty, or inappropriate you will be required to hand write a 2-page reflection
essay and it will be signed by your parents and filed in your folder. If necessary, you will be
referred to administration and to other departments that will educate you further. I have ZERO
tolerance for disrespecting others. Check our CORE VALUES

- Restroom: As long as you are doing your work, coming to class prepared and following
directions, I will allow you to use the restroom. ONE person out of the room at a time.
Patterns in restroom breaks will not be tolerated.

- Attitudes: We must all work together to keep my room full of positive energy, so if you make
our environment toxic, disciplinary actions will be taken. Leave your attitude and laziness
outside before you come into my room. There are consequences for poor behavior.

- 2 Strikes: If I have to continuously put a stop to poor behavior that is interfering with the
responsibilities of myself and other students, you will be exiled into the hallway and given a
reflection essay to write to be signed by your parent, and you will lose participation points for
the day.

- Bell to Bell: When the bell rings you need to have your materials for the day. You will stay
seated and engaged in your work until the bell rings. NO standing by the door!

- Electronics – Phones turn off, in backpack, out of sight policy, unless we need them for a class
assignment. iwatch not allowed, out of sight policy. If I see it, I will take it! If you need to charge
your phone you may ask, as long as you have not had behavior issues in my classroom.***

** When we work in class, we will ALWAYS write the questions down and will ALWAYS
respond in complete sentences.

- Different Learners- Please remind me what you need so that I can help you do your best!

WLC GRADING

Classwork: In class work is due before you walk out of the door. If you do not complete the work within
the time given, especially if you were fooling around, it will be entered as a zero and marked missing.
You may come to extra help to complete it for half credit.

Homework: Is due the next class we meet. It will be collected at the beginning of class. You must show
that you attempted your work. I want to see effort. If not turned in work will receive a Zero and marked
missing until you come to extra help to turn it in for half credit. ANY LATE WORK -5 POINTS

Any work turned in after 10 days is automatically a ZERO, per MS policy.

Project and Presentations: These tend to be worth a good number of points with high factors. These
allow you to use your creativity and to make a good representation of your Spanish abilities.

Participation points: In the World Languages Department participation is worth 10% of your grade.
Although this may not sound like a lot, it adds up to be a hefty part of your grade. When you
continuously lose participation points, you will notice your grade begin to go down, at that point you
must redirect your behavior as I cannot do anything for your grade.
SPANISH 7/7H SYLLABUS

How to LOSE participation points:

-Talking after I have asked you to stop

-Disrupting others from learning

-Using your computer for the wrong activities or wrongful use when you are supposed to be working

-Packing up while I am still teaching/ sleeping

-Being unprepared when class starts. No paper, no pencil, no binder etc.

-Speaking English during class, or during activities where you are supposed to use Spanish.

REWARDS AND EXTRA CREDIT

**I do not give any end of the semester “Señora Milian, I’m failing, and I need to pass!” extra
credit.

This class does not have any “make up” tests. You study and you come prepared, and you pass,
you will not need a make-up test.

In conclusion,

Remember that you are here to increase your knowledge of Spanish. I understand that Foreign
Language isn’t going to be easy for everyone. My promise is that if you try your hardest, which means
putting in honest effort into all homework assignments, studying for quizzes and following the classroom
rules, you will not only pass, but you will learn a great deal, and grow as a person.

Also, let me know how you learn best. I may not be doing something that specifically helps YOU! Don’t
be afraid to offer suggestions, talk to me privately and tell me how I can help you better.

In this class we keep our minds, and our hearts open to all cultures that are different than ours and we
do not take away any students right to learn.

I am printing my name in agreement with what is on the syllabus and agree to comply with the
classroom expectations as well as producing the best work that I possibly can.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

If you want to chat with another student, then you need to get to class early. Once you arrive to class
and I say BUENOS DIAS OR BUENAS TARDE, this means it is time to quietly sit and get your supplies out
on your desk.

YOU DO NOT TAKE OUT/USE YOUR LAPTOP UNLESS I SAY WE ARE USING THE LAPTOP. Which is
almost never.

1. Class will begin with attendance / 2 minutes of silent, individual meditation.

2. LA NOTICIA DEL DIA
What is la noticia del día? On a daily basis, a student will present a current event happening in a
Spanish country. This can be any Spanish speaking country, or any news happening in our
country about the Spanish community. We will go in alphabetical order, one student per day,
until the entire class has gone. As students present, I will enter their points. If you happen to be
absent on the day you need to present, then you will present the following class. If you do not
present at any point.

After each presentation the class may also add any comments, commendations, and thoughts
on such news (This is your only in class chance to speak English). This activity will allow all of us
to become more aware global citizens, including myself, as I will always learn from you!

How to find news/Planning ahead: News articles MUST BE PRINTED BEFORE COMING TO CLASS.
Before you arrive to class, the day before, you may look at the news, you look on your phone,
check the newspapers, ask your parents to help you find one. Read it, print it, bring it etc. Give
the class a short summary about it, and your thoughts/opinions. This should take 3-4 minutes.
You WILL NOT stand in front of the class and read the article, you will SUMMARIZE, meaning you
come to class prepared and ready to give the class details about the news event. 5 points total.
If you do not bring the article (half points off). If you present minimal details, look like you didn’t
come prepared (we can all tell, half points off).

Students are not required to present in Spanish. The purpose of this is to make us more globally
aware. Students may present news on ANY topic happening in the Spanish community. It may
be housing, immigration, sports, fashion, family issues, political, etc. Please stay relevant and
current, news should be no more than 4-5 days old. Appropriate news only. Read your article
several times before your date of presentation. You MUST come to class ready to summarize.

3. Warm up
After the noticia del dia, I will show the warmup of the day. This is to be completed in your
folder, handwritten. You write the questions, and you write the answers. You date and title your
warmup. We will review it. (These are part of binder checks.)
SPANISH 7/7H SYLLABUS

4. This step varies: I will begin my lesson, introduce new topics, notes will be taken, activities/ tasks
will be completed etc.

5. Exit tickets: I may pass out stickies to random students with quick questions for you to complete.
You turn it in to me before walking out of class. Some days our exit tickets can be an activity.

6. I will only dismiss you one at a time checking that the space around you is clean. You quietly
wait for the bell to ring before heading out to your next track.
