Recognition of Explosives / Explosive Devices

What is an Explosive?

 Is a substance which when activated will result in the release of sudden high pressure on
its surroundings while simultaneously releasing heat and gas
Types:

High Explosive Low Explosive

Less sensitive Readily burns
Unaffected by confinement Requires confinement
Shattering effect Pushing effect
Example: RDX, TNT, C4 Example: Gun powder, flare compositions,
propellants
 Use of Explosives often come with hazards such as: fragmentation, blast pressure,
thermal effect
Conventional Explosive Device- standard ordinance, such as those used by the Military
Improvised Explosive Device (IED)- homemade devices with several types such as: anti
handling devices, delay or timed device or common detonated devices
Components of an Explosive Device:

 Explosive (Main charge)

 Battery (Power Source)
 Switch (Timer)
 Detonator
