Sahar Hashemi's speech "What Makes an Entrepreneur"
A reaction essay
In this speech, Sahar Hashemi illustrates what she believes it takes to be an
entrepreneur. She defines it in a way where anyone can do it and how you don't need to have a specific skill set. Hashemi shared her knowledge on the importance of different aspects such as networking, management, motivation, and more to being a successful entrepreneur. She also talked about on how in an unorthodox way, she went from being a lawyer to becoming a CEO. I find that the most interesting part of her speech. The journey of her coffee business is deeply embedded in me. Her story made me realize many important things. The first one I’m being reminded of is the importance of choosing a career. One must consider his/her interest before deciding what profession to pursue, as Hashemi assured us that “What you love doing, you’ll be good at.” Another is that never be afraid to take risks. Risks may take you to new heights, help you reach new milestones in your life just like what Hashemi achieved. Some risks may not pay off, but failure provides the most valuable lessons a person can learn. You won’t really know until you try. Making do with what you have, taking risks, and not being afraid of taking chances are in fact, the distinctive qualities that make up an entrepreneur. I also learned that we should never worry about not knowing. Sahar Hashemi says that the most successful people are those who are willing to be clueless because the best ideas come from not knowing what you don't know. Lastly, the takeaway where I was particularly intrigued was when she said “do not give up.” The intensity and passion in her voice made me connect with her. You must be persistent and failure might discourage you, but the important thing is to not give up, to try again, and even if you fail again, keep trying until you succeed. Through her charming anecdotes and boldly honest confessions, I can say that Hashemi's speech captured the spirit of entrepreneurship and left me inspired to go out and make my big dreams happen.
