3 One and Many

At the end of this chapter, students will be able to:


€€ identify naming words as one or many.
€€ change naming words from one to many and back again.
Look at the pictures and read the words.

When we have more than one of something, we change the word to show
it. The naming words cow, bat, fan and apple change to cows, bats, fans and
apples.
Let us have a look at some more examples.

one girl many girls one dog many dogs

one key many keys one bird many birds


€€ For most naming words, we just add –s to show many. For example,

ant ants ear ears
apple apples eye eyes
ball balls fan fans
bat bats girl girls
bird birds goat goats
book books mug mugs
bowl bowls pot pots

cat cats toy toys
cub cubs window windows

A. Add –s to these naming words to show many.

€€ For naming words that end with –ch, –o, –s,–sh, –ss, –x or –z we add –es to
show many. For example,

Play in groups of five.


First person: Say a number and an animal (For example, One bear).
Second person: Say what the animal does (For example, runs into the forest).
Next person: Increase the number and choose a new animal and action.
Keep going until someone makes a mistake!
Remember to use the right number and animal words each time!
