Aditya L1 Research

Aditya L-1 is India's first solar observatory mission launched on September 2, 2023, aimed at studying the Sun's chromospheric and coronal dynamics from the Lagrangian point L1. The mission involves a series of orbital maneuvers to position the satellite in a halo orbit around L1, allowing for continuous observation of solar activities. The data collected will help address key issues related to coronal heating, solar flares, and space weather dynamics.

Findings about Aditya L-1

Aditya L-1 is the first mission to observe Sun

Nigar Shihaji is the project’s director
Aditya-L-1 was launched aboard the PSLV C57 at 11:50 IST on 2 September 2023
It successfully achieved its intended orbit nearly an hour later, and separated from its fourth stage at
12:57 IST.
Aditya L-1, following a flight duration of 63 minutes and 20 seconds, achieved a successful injection
into an elliptical orbit around the Earth at 12:54 IST.
Aditya L-1 underwent a series of four Earth-bound orbital maneuvers prior to its injection to a transfer
orbit towards Lagrance point (L-1).

Purpose

The Aditya-L-1 mission is an Indian solar observatory at Lagrangian point L1 for “Observing and
understanding the chromospheric and coronal dynamics of the Sun” in a continuous manner.
The suit of Aditya L1 payloads are expected to provide most crucial information to understand the
problems of coronal heating, Coronal Mass Ejection, pre-flare and flare activities, and their
characteristics, dynamics of space weather, study of the propagation of particles, and fields in the
interplanetary medium etc.

Significance and Impact

Aditya -1 mission involved placing the satellite in 800 Km low earth orbit. Later ISRO planned
to place the satellite in the halo orbit around the Lagrangian Point (L1). L1 is 1.5 Million Km
from the Earth. This point provides the advantage of observing the Sun continuously without
any disturbance.
