Plotting_Linear_and_Quadratic_graphs__LB_10.2

The document outlines a lesson on plotting linear and curved graphs, focusing on calculating values of y for given x using substitution. It includes learning objectives such as identifying coordinates in all quadrants and generating tables of values for plotting. Examples of plotting line graphs are provided, demonstrating how to derive coordinates and plot them on a graph.

Plotting Linear and Curved Graphs Lesson 3 and 4

Starter Substitution
• Calculate the value of y in each of the following:
y = 5x when x = 6
y=x+7 when x = 8
y = 2x when x = -3 y = 2x when x = 5
y=x–6 when x = 13
y = x + 10 when x = 7
y = 2x + 1 when x = 4
y = 3x – 5 when x = 10

Level 6 04/12/2024

Learning Objectives:

• Able to identify and plot co-ordinates in

all four quadrants

• Able to generate a table of values

• Able to plot a straight line and curved graph

Plotting Line Graphs
• To plot the line 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2, I need some
co-ordinates

• To get the co-ordinates, I use a table of values

• To find 𝑦, I substitute in values of 𝑥

Plotting Line Graphs
x -2 -1 0 1 2
y 0 1 2 3 4
For the line y = x + 2 When x = -1

When x = -2 y = -1 + 2

y = -2 + 2 y=1

y=0 When x = 0

y=0+2

y=2
Plotting Line Graphs
x -2 -1 0 1 2
y 0 1 2 3 4
Co-ordinates (-2, 0) (-1, 1) (0, 2) (1, 3) (2, 4)

Now we have some co-ordinates, we can

plot them to draw the line!
y y=x+2
