Correlation and Rank Correlation

1. Ten students obtained the following percentage of marks in the college internal
examination (x) and in the final university examination (y). Find the correlation coefficient
between the marks of the two tests.
x 51 63 63 49 50 60 65 63 46 50

y 49 72 75 50 48 60 70 48 60 56

2. Calculate Karl Pearson’s correlation coefficient for the following data

x 23 27 28 29 30 31 33 35 36 39
y 18 22 23 24 25 26 28 29 30 32

3. A sample of 25 pairs of values x and y gave following results

=∑ x 127;
= ∑ x 760;
= ∑ y 100;
= ∑ y 449;
2
= ∑ xy 500 . Later on, it was found

that two pairs of values were taken as ( 8,14 ) and ( 8, 6 ) instead of correct values ( 8,12 )
and ( 6,8 ) . Find correct correlation coefficient between x and y.

4. Calculate the correlation coefficient between x and y from the following data n = 10 ,

∑ x = 140 ; ∑ y = 150 ; ∑ ( x − 10 ) ∑ ( y − 15) 215 ; ∑ ( x − 10 )( y − 15 ) =

.
5. In two sets of variables x and y with 50 observations each gave the results
= x 10,
= y 6,=σ x 3,= x, y ) 0.3 . But on subsequent verification it was found
σ y 2, r (=
that in one pair ( x, y ) , value of x = 10 and one value of y = 6 were inaccurate and were
discarded. Find r ( x, y ) for the remaining 49 observations.

6. In the usual notation, prove the Spearman’s formula for Rank correlation

6 n
1−
R= 2 ∑
n(n − 1) i =1
di 2 , where di =
xi − yi
7. Find the rank correlation coefficient for a group of 6 persons between their examination
marks and I.Q’s

Exam marks 70 60 80 90 10 20

I.Q 110 100 140 120 80 90

8. Calculate rank correlation coefficient from the following data

X 36 56 20 42 33 44 50 15 60
Y 50 35 70 58 75 60 45 80 38

9. From the following data of marks obtained by 10 students in Physics and Chemistry
calculate the rank correlation coefficient

Physics 35 56 50 65 44 38 44 50 15 26

Chemistry 50 35 70 25 35 58 75 60 55 35

10. The coefficient of rank correlation of marks obtained by 10 students in Mathematics and
Physics was found to be 0.8. It was later discovered that the different in ranks in the two
subjects obtained by a student was wrongly taken as 5 instead of 8. Find the correct
coefficient of rank correlation.
