Gen. Chem 1 Problem Set 1 – ANSWER KEY

Measurement: Units, Precision, Accuracy and Errors
I. Directions. Analyze the following carefully. Solve for what is asked. Show your complete
solution and box your final answer.
1. A solid piece of lead has a mass of 23.94 g and a volume of 2.10 cm3. From these data,
calculate the density of lead in SI units (kilograms per cubic meter).
Given:
m = 23.94g
v = 2.10cm3
Required: ρ
𝑚
Formula: ρ = 𝑣
Solution:
23.94𝑔
ρ = 2.10𝑐𝑚3 = 11.4 g/cm3

Conversion:
1𝑘𝑔 100𝑐𝑚 3
11.4 g/cm3 x (1000 𝑔)x( ) = 11400 kg/m3 Note: You are to raise (100cm/1m)
1𝑚
first to cube
2. A rectangular building lot has a width of 75.0 ft and a length of 125 ft. Determine the
area of this lot in square meters.
Given: Convert ft first to meter
1𝑚
w = 75.0 ft x (3.28084 𝑓𝑡) = 22.86 m
1𝑚
l = 125 ft x (3.28084 𝑓𝑡) = 38.10 m
Required: A
Formula: A = l x w
Solution:
A = 38.10 m x 22.86 m = 870.966 m2
3. The density of gold is 19.3 g/cm3. What is this value in kilograms per cubic meter?
1𝑘𝑔 100𝑐𝑚 3
19.3g/cm3 x (1000 𝑔)x( 1𝑚
) = 19300 kg/m3
4. What is the volume of 115.01 g of an object with a density of 45.30 g/cm3?
a. Report your answer using the rules of operations in significant figures.
Given:
m = 115.01g
ρ = 45.30 g/cm3
Required: v
𝑚 𝑚
Formula: ρ = 𝑣 dimensional analysis, v = ρ
Solution:
115.01𝑔
v= = 2.538852097 cm3 = 2.539 cm3 Since the divisor has only 4 SF, the
45.30 g/cm3
quotient should only have 4 SF.
b. Convert your answer in letter a in m3 in three significant figures.
1𝑚
2.539 cm3 x ( 100 𝑐𝑚)3 = 2.539x10-6 m3 = 2.54x10-6 m3

II. Directions. Determine the number of significant figures. Perform the indicated operation, if
any.
1. 1.00010 x 108 6SF
2. 0.00000010 x 102 2SF
3. 3.0110 + 0.0004 + 1.1 + 1.0 = 5.114 = 5.1 , 2SF
4. 12.00 x 00.12 = 1.4 , 2SF

III. Directions. Provide what is being asked.

1. Illustrate accuracy and precision (using Dart board)

2. Differentiate random from systematic errors.

FORMULA and CONVERSION FACTORS:
Density = mass/volume
Arec = l x w, where l = length, w = width
100 cm = 1 m
1000 g = 1 kg
