NOTES AND ASSIGNMENT

CH. – DISCOVERING TUT: THE SAGA CONTINUES


Literary Devices Used:-
1. ‘An angry wind stirred up ghostly dust devils’
- Personification is used here. The wind is pictured as an angry person stirring up/throwing about
things around him.
2. ‘Dark-bellied clouds had scudded across the desert sky all day and now were veiling the
stars in casket grey.’
- Personification is used here. The dark clouds are pictured as dark-bellied persons (could be
giants) moving across the sky covering the stars in grey.
3. The sun can beat down like a hammer.
- Simile is used here. It shows the intensity of the heat. You get the image of a blacksmith beating
the iron material on his anvil into shape.
4. Just above the entrance to Tut’s tomb stood Orion …watching over the boy king.
- Personification is used here. Orion constellation is presented as a guard watching over Tut.

Vocabulary:-
scud –(of clouds) to move quickly across the sky.
e.g. Dark clouds could be seen scudding across the evening sky.

ransack – to search a place making it untidy and causing damage


e.g. The house had been ransacked by burglars.

antiquity – the ancient past, an object from ancient times.


e.g. The statue was brought to Rome in antiquity./ An Egyptian antiquity

resurrection – returning to life again after death.


resurrect (v)
e.g. Christians believe that Jesus Christ resurrected three days after his death.

circumvent – to find a way to avoid difficulty or a rule


e.g. They found a way to circumvent the law.

eerie – strange, mysterious, and frightening


e.g. I found the silence at the churchyard eerie.

intriguing- unusual and interesting.


e.g. They found his explanation intriguing.

wacky – amusing in a crazy way


e.g. He has such wacky ideas.
