Exam Practice A

Try and do it without looking up answers and do it in the recommended time. If you are happy working
on screen, you can do these tasks straight into Word. If you prefer paper and pencil, do the task under
timed conditions and then type it into Word to upload it (without changing anything). We ask for it in
Word and not scanned in as then tutors can comment on things electronically.

Save and name the document with your name e.g. exampracticeA_jeremyharmer

Paper One Task One (6 marks) – recommended time 5 minutes

Provide the term for each definition.

Write your answers in your answer booklet. Provide only one answer per question.

a A vowel sound that glides from one vowel to another within a syllable and that makes up
a single phoneme e.g. /eɪ/ or /ɔɪ/.

b A verb which does not take an object, e.g. The baby fell down.

c Words and phrases used to make what we say less direct. They are often used to avoid
commitment and may include the use of vague language. For example, Maybe she just
feels kinda blue. Perhaps, we should leave now.

d A term used to describe a language test where one test taker’s results are decided by
comparing them to other test takers’ results instead of using external criteria.

e A term used to describe words that have the same spelling but a different meaning and
sometimes different pronunciation, e.g. moped (past tense of mope) and moped
(motorbike).

f A type of inductive language focus activity, where learners are encouraged and helped to
figure out rules and patterns about language by answering questions based on given
examples.

Paper One Task Two (12 marks) – recommended time 15 minutes

Provide a definition and an appropriate brief example or illustration of each of the terms
below.

Write your answers in your answer booklet.
