The text for this task is reproduced below. It was said by a young learner at B1+ level in
response to the following task:
Look at the two photographs which show people spending time outside in different
situations. Compare the photographs and say what you think the people are enjoying about
spending time outside in these situations. You have one minute for this.
Focusing on the areas listed below, identify a total of four key strengths and weaknesses
of the text. Provide an example from the text of each choice. Include at least one strength
and one weakness in your answer.
For the first picture, they are having a picnic with their friends and their smiley face,
and everybody’s face. They seems very happy to chat with each other and spend
their time with the friends in the good weather.
And for the second picture, the girls are… uhm… hang out on the streets. They may
go shopping or looking for the restaurants. And they spend their time with best
friends and uhm enjoy with // the time with each other, just like shopping with each
other or… uhm // just // I think // because more people there so people might more
enjoy spending this because… uhm have more fun.

As a learner, I remember very few teachers using the IPA chart in the classroom.
It was a set of quite strange symbols that more or less resembled letters, but they
weren’t actually letters. It was kind of an alternative alphabet that didn’t make
sense to me. My big question as a student was ‘Why do these symbols exist?
What for?’
