module 5- curve fitting

The document discusses curve fitting, which involves finding a mathematical equation to represent the relationship between two variables based on observed data. It outlines various types of curves, such as straight lines, parabolas, and exponential curves, and provides guidelines for selecting the appropriate equation based on the plotted data. Additionally, it introduces the method of least squares as a technique for determining the best-fitting line through a set of observations.

T= CURVE FITTING \ 8 AND METHOD OF LEAST SQUARES si CURVE FITTING When observations in respect of two variables are available, very often a relation is found to exist between them. For example, height and weight of persons are interdependent, expenditure depends on income, yield of a crop depends on the amount of rainfall, production depends on price, etc, Frequency, it is found desirable to express this relationship between variables by means of some mathematical equation, representing a certain geometrical curve. The process of finding such a curve or its equation on the ___ basis of a given set of observations is called curve fitting. |__ We list below the equations of some common types of curves: t L. y=atbx Straight line | 2. + bx +o Parabola Bee 3. +bxter+de Cubic curve 4. + bx + cx? +... + px! Polynomial of n-th degree 5. bt Exponential curve > 6. ysatbet Modified exponential curve 7. ; =atbe Logistic curve 8. logy=atbct Gompertz curve 9. year Geometric curve The variables x and y are often referred to as independent variable and dependent Variable respectively. (All-letters a, b, c, d,... p, except x and y, appearing in the above equations represent constants.) The choice of the appropriate equation to be fitted to a given set of observations is often facilitated by the following rules: : Plot the corresponding observations of x and-y as points on a graph paper. If the pattern of points shows approximately a linear path, use the straight line. (or, if the successive differences in y corresponding to equidistant values of x _ afe'apfproximately equal, use the straight line). , Gi) Iflog y when plotted against x shows a linear path, use the exponential curve. (ii) Tf tog y when plotted against log x show a linear path, use the geometric curve. } ~ SS qurve FHCEING 80d Mothod of Lease squaceg 246 Seatietéonl Methods ch GD srwrsouet ume an varavora . sereight tine Sra ire poner renin of <0 of 8 Temeceo where A,B, Care constants.
