1. Why are people considered as a resource?


People are a nation’s greatest resource.
Nature’s bounty becomes significant only when people find it useful.
It is people with their demands and abilities that turn them into resources
Hence human resource is the ultimate resource.

2. What are the causes of uneven distribution of population in the world?


The causes for the uneven distribution of population are
Topography - People always prefer to live in plains rather than mountains and plateaus because
plains are suitable for farming, manufacturing etc.
Climate- People usually avoid extreme climate that are very hot or very cold.
Soil- Fertile soil provide suitable land for agriculture. So fertile plains are densely populated.
Water- People prefer to live in areas where fresh water is easily available.
Minerals – Areas with mineral deposits are more populated as it opens doors for varieties of job
opportunities.
Social- Areas of better housing, education, health facilities are densely populated.
Cultural- Places of religious and cultural significance attract people.
Economic- Areas which job opportunities attract people.

3. What is life expectancy?


It is the number of years that an average person can expect to live.

4. The world population has grown rapidly. Why?


The world population has grown very rapidly because of the following reasons: -
Better food supplies and medicines.
Death rate reduced while the number of births still remained fairly high.

5. Discuss the role of any two factors influencing population change.


Birth rate, death rate and migration are the main factors that influence the change of population.
When birth rate increases and death rate decreases the population increases.
When the two rates are equal population remains balanced.
So the birth rate and death rate affect the balance of population.

6. What is meant by population composition?


Population composition consists of data about the number of male-female, population divided
into age group.
It also maintains the record about literate –illiterate population and their occupation, health
conditions, level of income etc.
7. What are population pyramid? How do they help to understanding about the population of the
country?
The geographical representation of population composition of a country is known as population
pyramid.
It shows the present number of males and females with their age groups.
The age group distribution of population tells us the number of dependence and economically
alive individuals present in the population.
