Hempel’s Coating Solutions

INFRASTRUCTURE

1
Introduction
The purpose of this document is to help you select the
best Hempel coating system to protect your structure
against corrosion. All steel structures, facilities and
installations exposed to the atmosphere, submerged
under water or in soil, suffer because of corrosion.
Consequently they require protection from the harm
caused by corrosion during their lifetime. Throughout this
document you will find important information regarding
criteria for the right paint selection and surface
preparation requirements.

This document has been prepared in accordance with the

latest edition of the International Standard ISO 12944
“Paints and varnishes – Corrosion protection of steel
structures by protective paint systems” and Hempel’s
own recommendations for coating solutions are also
included.

This document is to be considered as a guide only.

If you would like specific information on your project

please contact a member of our sales team.

Over the lifetime
of a project, we
might expect a
specification to be
revised and
amended several
times

Project specifiers
are spending a lot
of time thinking
about products and
researching them

NBS survey shows that

60% of respondents
re-use specifications
written for other
projects. However,
every project is unique,
one size doesn’t fit all

Specifiers continue
to rely on
manufacturer
providing the right
information for any
given stage of a
project

Surface Preparation
New Steel

1. Remove oil and grease etc. thoroughly with suitable detergent.

2. Remove salts and other contaminants by high pressure fresh water cleaning.

3. All weld spatter, rough welds, sharp edges, etc. shall be ground smoothly prior to blasting.

4. Abrasive blasting to near white metal Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1:1988) with a surface profile corresponding to Rugotest
No. 3, BN10a, Keane-Tator Comparator 3.0 G/S, or ISO Comparator Rough Medium (G).

5. Apply immediately after cleaning.

6. All damage of shopprimer and contamination from storage and fabrication should be thoroughly cleaned prior to
overcoating.

Galvanized Steel

1. Galvanized steel to be coated shall be cleaned, degreased and sweep blasted

2. Blast cleaning shall be carried out by smooth weep blasting to ensure on the galvanized surfaces, the zinc layer
shall not be damaged, a smooth uniform surface roughness shall be achieved, no defects such as break
through or crisping of the zinc layer shall occur

3. After sweep blasting, the thickness of the galvanizing shall be checked to confirm that it still in accordance with
the requirement.

Concrete

1. Remove slip agent and other possible contaminants by emulsion washing followed by high pressure hosing with
fresh water.

2. Remove scum layer and loose matter to a hard, rough and uniform surface, preferably by abrasive blasting,
possibly by other mechanical treatment or acid etching.

3. Seal surface with suitable sealer, as per relevant painting specification.

Repair & Maintenance

1. Remove oil and grease etc. thoroughly with suitable detergent.

2. Remove salts and other contaminants by high pressure fresh water cleaning.

3. Clean damaged areas thoroughly by power tool cleaning to minimum St 2 (spot-repairs) or by abrasive blasting
to min. Sa 2, preferably to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1:1988). Improved surface preparation will improve the perfor-
mance of the product.

processes and procedures of surface preparation,

7
ISO 12944
International Standard for Corrosion Protection
of Structural Steel

➢ The ISO 12944 standard is designed to assist architects, engineers, specifiers, contractors, applicators and
corrosion experts in selecting the suitable coating solutions to meet the requirements of both environment and
service life.

➢ Whether in the atmosphere, immersed in water or soil, all unprotected steel s subjected to corrosion which will
eventually ended up to protection failure. Selecting the right system would not only protect the steel but also
maximise the lifetime of a structure

➢ Selecting the right Hempel’s coating system will definitely provides you extra confidence that the corrosion pro-
tection will fulfil your project and requirement.

ISO 12944 – Environmental Corrosivity

ISO 12944 distinguishes 6 basic atmospheric corrosivity categories:

Environment examples
Corrosivity
Category
Exterior Interior

Heated buildings with a clean atmosphere

C1 Very low -
e.g. offices, shops, schools, hotels

Buildings which are not heated, where

Atmospheres contaminated to a small extent,
C2 Low condensation may occur
mainly rural regions
e.g. storage facilities, sports halls, depots

Production halls to facilities humidity and

Industrial and urban atmospheres with a low
certain air contamination
C3 Medium sulphur oxide (IV) contamination level. Inshore
e.g. foodstuff plants, laundries, breweries,
areas of low salinity
dairies

Industrial areas and inshore areas of medium Chemical plants, swimming pools, ship repair
C4 High
salinity yards

Industrial areas of high humidity and

Buildings and areas of almost constant
C5 Very high aggressive atmosphere and inshore areas of
condensation and high contamination
high salinity

Offshore areas of high salinity or industrial

areas of extremely high humidity and Buildings and areas of almost constant
CX Extreme
aggressive atmosphere or subtropical and condensation and aggressive contamination
tropical areas

C3 & C4 coating system is suitable in most of the Malaysia Infrastructure Context for Buildings, Bridges,
Transportation Hubs (airports, train stations and bus stations), Water & Wastewater Facilities, Port Equipment & more.
