Define Anti Markovnikov Rule and Markovnikov With…

The document explains Markovnikov's Rule and Anti-Markovnikov's Rule in the context of the addition of halogen acids to unsymmetrical alkenes. Markovnikov's Rule states that the negative part of the halogen acid attaches to the carbon with fewer hydrogen atoms, while Anti-Markovnikov's Rule indicates the opposite when peroxide is present. Examples using propene illustrate both rules effectively.

Physical Properties of Alkenes Define Anti M...

Question

Define Anti Markovnikov's Rule And

Markovnikov's with example.

Open in App

Solution

Markovnikov's Rule:
According to this rule, in an
unsymmetrical alkene when the
addition of halogen acid (HX) takes
place, then the negative part of the
halogen acid is attached to that carbon
atom which is double bonded as well
have the least number of hydrogen
atoms.

For example: The addition of hydrogen

bromide to propene.
CH3 − CH = CH2 + H − Br →
Propene Hydrogen bromide

CH3 – CHBr − CH3

2− Bromo propane

In this reaction, bromine is a negative part of

halogen acid which attaches to the double-
bonded carbon atom and has the least
number of the hydrogen atom.
Anti- Markovnikov's Rule:
Anti- Markovnikov Rule is also called
the peroxide effect and the kharasch
effect.
According to this rule, in an
unsymmetrical alkene when the
addition of halogen acid (HX) takes
place, then the negative part of the
halogen acid is attached to that carbon
atom which is double bonded as well
have the more hydrogen atoms.

For example: The addition of hydrogen

bromide to propene in presence of peroxide.
CH3 − CH = CH2 + H − Br
Propene Hydrogen bromide
Peroxide
−→ CH3 − CH2 − CH2 − Br
1−Bromo propane
