Introduction to Dynamics
Introduction to Dynamics
OF RIGID BODIES
INTRODUCTION
• Dynamics is a branch of mechanics that
deals with the analysis of bodies in motion.
• The first significant contribution to dynamics
was made by Galileo ( 1564 – 1642).
Galileo’s experiments on uniformly
accelerated bodies led Newton (1642 –
1727) to formulate his fundamental laws of
motion.
• Later: Euler, D’Alembert, Lagrange and
others develop techniques for the
application of the laws of dynamics
INTRODUCTION
• Kinematics is the science of describing the motion
of objects using words, diagrams, numbers,
graphs, and equations. It is a study of the geometry
of motion
• Kinematics is a branch of mechanics. The goal of any
study of kinematics is to develop sophisticated mental
models which serve to describe (and ultimately,
explain) the motion of real-world objects.
INTRODUCTION
• Kinetics is the study of the relation existing
between the forces acting on a body, the mass
of the body, and the motion of the body.
• Kinetics is used to predict the motion caused by the
given forces or to determine the forces required to
produce a given motion.
•.
APPLICATIONS
There are many problems in engineering whose solutions require
application of the principles of dynamics:
• Structural design of any vehicle – automobile, airplane, etc. –
requires consideration of the motion to which it is subjected.
• This is also true for many mechanical devices such as motors,
pumps, movable tools, industrial manipulators, and machinery
• Predictions of the motions of artificial satellites, projectiles, and
spacecraft are based on the theory of dynamics.
PROBLEM SOLVING
• The most effective way of learning the principles of
dynamics is to solve problems.
